Florida Man Fatally Shoots And Kills Mother While On Shrooms

Sunrise Man Arrested After Fatal Shooting of His Mother While Hallucinating on Mushrooms

SUNRISE, FL – A Florida man is in custody after authorities say he fatally shot his mother while experiencing a drug-induced hallucination. The suspect, 29-year-old Jorge Omar Torres, was arrested Friday evening at the Waterside Village Condos off Weston Road in Sunrise, according to police.

Authorities responded to multiple reports of gunfire, including one 911 call stating that a naked man was running in and out of a residence. Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered blood seeping from beneath the apartment’s front door. Inside, they found the victim’s body just beyond the entryway, as well as a handgun in the backyard, police said.

Surveillance footage reportedly captured Torres scaling a fence and entering a neighbor’s yard shortly after the shooting, where he removed his clothing. About 30 minutes later, officers detained Torres, who was completely nude, and took him into custody.

According to the arrest report, Torres admitted to purchasing eight grams of psychedelic mushrooms for $60 earlier that day from an acquaintance in Davie. He allegedly consumed two grams at Markham Park, along with a marijuana cigarette, before returning home, where he resides with his parents and brother.

Under the influence of the substances, Torres claimed he began to hallucinate, perceiving his brother as a combination of a lizard and a cockroach. He initially retrieved his 9mm firearm and pointed it at his brother but ultimately decided not to shoot and returned the weapon to his room, the report said.

Later, when his mother arrived home, she confronted Torres about his erratic behavior and instructed him to rest in his room. Instead, he climbed out of his bedroom window, claiming he needed to ensure the safety of his dog. His mother eventually persuaded him to re-enter the home and locked the front door behind them.

At that moment, Torres allegedly became convinced that his mother was a “bad guy.” He retrieved his firearm again and fired between three and six rounds into her chest as she stood near the front door, police said.

Following the shooting, Torres fled through the rear sliding door, abandoning his firearm outside. His brother, who had left to retrieve the dog, later encountered Torres hiding near a red vehicle. Torres reportedly called him a cockroach before running away and jumping a fence.

Police later apprehended Torres and booked him into jail on a murder charge. During his initial court appearance, a judge ordered him to be held without bond.

The case remains under investigation as authorities work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the tragic incident.
