Florida Rolls Out Redesigned Driver’s Licenses With New Security Features, State Symbols and Color Coded IDs
Florida residents receiving or renewing a driver’s license are beginning to see a dramatically redesigned credential featuring enhanced anti-fraud technology, new color-coded identifiers and a collection of unmistakably Florida imagery ranging from an alligator and manatee to Castillo de San Marcos and Space Shuttle Discovery.
The Florida Department of Highway Safety and Motor Vehicles began issuing the redesigned driver’s licenses and identification cards at service centers statewide on September 30. The cards represent Florida’s first major driver’s license redesign since 2017 and are intended to make credentials more difficult to counterfeit while making different types of licenses easier for police officers, businesses and other organizations to identify. Florida drivers do not need to rush to a DMV office to obtain one. Existing licenses and identification cards remain valid through their expiration dates, and the previous design will gradually disappear as residents renew or replace their credentials.
Florida Packs the New License With Sunshine State Imagery
The redesign gives the Florida driver’s license a considerably stronger state identity. Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine, the oldest masonry fortress in the continental United States, appears as the primary background image on the front of the credential. An orange has been incorporated into the “O” in “Florida,” a manatee appears near the bottom left corner and an alligator is embedded inside the REAL ID star.
The Florida theme continues on the reverse side, where Space Shuttle Discovery appears as a tribute to the state’s role in the American space program. Discovery flew 39 missions and spent a combined 365 days in space before completing its final mission in 2011. The card also includes the words “Let Us Alone,” a phrase associated with Florida’s first unofficial state flag, which was presented to Florida’s first governor, William D. Moseley, during his 1845 inauguration.
Rather than simply decorating the credential, some of the Florida imagery is incorporated into its security design, making the card more difficult to reproduce convincingly.

New Design Doubles Down on Anti-Fraud Technology
Florida officials say security was a major reason for the overhaul. The new credentials incorporate additional background security graphics, redundant information, tactile elements, ultraviolet ink and optically variable security features designed to make fraudulent reproduction more difficult.
The concept is similar to the security strategy used in modern currency and passports. Instead of relying on a single feature that a counterfeiter must replicate, the credential contains multiple overlapping elements that can be checked visually, physically or under specialized lighting. State officials say the additional security layers are intended to make Florida credentials more resistant to increasingly sophisticated forms of identity and document fraud.
Green, Blue, Red and Orange Make Licenses Easier to Identify
Florida is also using a color coded system that allows the type of credential to be identified quickly. Standard driver’s licenses use a green header, commercial driver’s licenses use blue, identification cards use red and learner’s licenses use orange. Credentials issued to people under 21 are visually distinct as well. The redesigned cards feature a prominent indicator showing when the holder will turn 21, allowing businesses, law enforcement officers and others who regularly inspect identification to determine a person’s age more quickly. The system is designed to make both age and credential verification faster without requiring someone examining the card to search through multiple lines of information.
New Cards Include Additional Florida Designations
The redesigned credentials preserve a number of optional and specialized designations used by Florida residents, including indicators for veterans, organ donors, people who are deaf or hard of hearing and people with developmental disabilities. The cards can also display lifetime sportsman’s, boater, freshwater fishing, saltwater fishing and hunting license designations. The new credential also includes a “Temporary Non-Domiciled” designation for certain commercial driver’s licenses and commercial learner’s permits.
Documentation requirements for some applicants are also changing. Bay County officials told WMBB that certain non-citizen applicants establishing lawful immigration status may now be required to present a valid U.S. visa along with applicable federal immigration documentation. Florida’s driver licensing requirements list different immigration documents depending on an applicant’s status, meaning the exact documentation required can vary by individual.
Your Current Florida License Is Still Valid
For most Floridians, the most important part of the announcement is what they do not have to do. There is no requirement to replace a valid Florida driver’s license simply because a new design has been introduced. Current credentials remain valid until their normal expiration dates and will gradually be removed from circulation as residents renew their licenses or obtain replacements.
Beginning September 30, the redesigned credential became the card used for new in office issuance across Florida as the state began transitioning away from printing the previous design. That means Floridians will see both versions of the driver’s license in circulation for years, and an older looking Florida license is not invalid simply because it does not contain the alligator, manatee, Space Shuttle Discovery or other elements of the 2026 redesign.
For a state known for putting its identity on everything from license plates to tourism campaigns, the new credential is unmistakably Florida: a Spanish fortress, an orange, a manatee, an alligator and a space shuttle all packed into something small enough to fit inside a wallet.
