France delivered one of the most dominant performances of the 2026 FIFA World Cup on Tuesday, defeating Sweden 3-0 in the Round of 32 behind another sensational display from Kylian Mbappé to book their place in the last 16.

France quickly punished that miss. With Sweden increasingly stretched, France continued to create chance after chance.
Alexander Isak managed a rare sight of goal for the Swedes, but it was little more than a brief interruption in France’s complete control.
Olise twice came close to adding his own name to the scoresheet before combining brilliantly with Mbappé to put the contest beyond any doubt.
The pair exchanged a slick one-two near the edge of the penalty area before Mbappé delicately lifted his finish into the roof of the net for his second goal of the evening and sixth of the tournament.
The strike not only sealed the victory but also moved the French superstar level with Messi as the World Cup’s leading scorer.
With the result secured, Mbappé received a standing ovation when he was substituted six minutes from time after another masterclass that highlighted his growing influence on France’s quest for global glory.
Sweden nearly grabbed a late consolation when Viktor Gyökeres found space inside the area, but his effort was driven straight at goalkeeper Mike Maignan, summing up an evening in which little went right for the Scandinavian side.
France’s blend of pace, creativity and clinical finishing overwhelmed Sweden from start to finish, and had it not been for Zetterström’s heroics, the margin of victory could have been considerably larger.
The emphatic win sends Les Bleus confidently into the Round of 16, where Paraguay await in what promises to be another fascinating knockout encounter.
If France reproduce the level they displayed in New Jersey, few teams remaining in the tournament will relish the prospect of standing in their way.
