Hot Law Student Sentenced to 25 Years for Cocaine Possession in Dubai

British Law Student Sentenced to 25 Years in Dubai Over Cocaine Arrest

“She made one mistake, and now she may spend her life in prison.” That’s the reality facing 23-year-old Mia O’Brien, a British law student from Liverpool, after a Dubai court sentenced her to 25 years in jail and imposed a £100,000 fine for cocaine use and possession.

The Arrest

O’Brien was arrested in October 2024 alongside a British female friend and her boyfriend after Dubai police raided a flat where they had been partying. Officers allegedly seized 50 grams of cocaine during the operation. Although Mia reportedly admitted to consuming only “a single line of cocaine,” the quantity seized meant prosecutors pursued a serious trafficking-level charge under the UAE’s zero-tolerance drug laws.

The Trial

Her case was heard on July 25, 2025, in a trial that lasted just a single day and was conducted entirely in Arabic. O’Brien, who does not speak the language, was found guilty and sentenced under UAE statutes that impose long sentences even for small amounts of narcotics. Observers have raised concerns over whether O’Brien received a fair trial, given the lack of English interpretation and the absence of transparency in Dubai’s judicial process.

The Sentence

The punishment is severe:

  • 25 years in Al Awir Prison, one of Dubai’s most notorious detention facilities.

  • £100,000 fine, which must be paid in addition to her prison term.

If the sentence stands, O’Brien could remain in prison until 2050, long after her peers have built careers and families.

Family’s Response

O’Brien’s mother, Danielle McKenna, 46, from Huyton, Liverpool, has spoken out in anguish. In a heartfelt message on a now-deleted GoFundMe page, she wrote:

“As you can all probably imagine, as her mother I am absolutely devastated. I haven’t seen my daughter since last October. Mia is only 23 years old and has never done a bad thing in her life. This is a young girl, who went to university to do law, and unfortunately got mixed up in the wrong so-called friends and made a very stupid mistake and is now paying the price.”

The GoFundMe fundraiser, which raised just under £700 before being removed, violated the platform’s guidelines prohibiting fundraising for the legal defense of certain alleged crimes.

A Harsh Reminder

Dubai promotes itself as a global tourist hub, but cases like O’Brien’s underscore the risk for foreigners under the UAE’s uncompromising drug laws. Even trace amounts of banned substances can lead to multi-decade prison sentences. For Mia O’Brien, a single reckless night has turned into a decades-long nightmare and a painful reminder of how unforgiving Dubai’s legal system can be.
