The Carolina Hurricanes are one win away from their first trip to the Stanley Cup Final since 2006 after a dominant 4-0 victory over the Montreal Canadiens in Game 4 of the Eastern Conference Final on Wednesday night at Bell Centre.
Carolina now leads the best of seven series 3-1 and can clinch the Eastern Conference title in Game 5 on Friday night at Lenovo Center in Raleigh, North Carolina.
Goaltender Frederik Andersen delivered another stellar postseason performance, stopping all 18 shots he faced to record his third shutout of the Stanley Cup Playoffs. The Hurricanes overwhelmed Montreal from the opening puck drop, scoring three times in a span of just 2:47 late in the first period to seize complete control.
Sebastian Aho opened the scoring on the power play at 14:59 of the first period. After initiating the play with a pass back to Shayne Gostisbehere at the right point, Aho drifted into position above the right face off circle and blasted a one-timer past Canadiens goaltender Jakub Dobes off a feed from Nikolaj Ehlers.
Just over a minute later, Carolina captain Jordan Staal doubled the lead. K’Andre Miller carried the puck wide around Montreal forward Phillip Danault before sending a backhand pass into the crease, where Staal battled Josh Anderson in front and redirected the puck through Dobes’ pads at 16:07.
The Hurricanes struck again at 17:46 when rookie forward Logan Stankoven finished a 2 on 1 rush with Jackson Blake. Blake threaded a cross ice pass to Stankoven, who snapped the puck over Dobes’ outstretched left pad for his team leading eighth goal in 12 playoff games.
Montreal never recovered from the first period outburst. Carolina’s relentless forecheck and defensive structure smothered the Canadiens throughout the night, and the Hurricanes dominated possession in the third period, outshooting Montreal 19-3 in the final frame.
Dobes did everything he could to keep the Canadiens within striking distance, making 40 saves despite the lopsided pressure. But the Hurricanes continued to dictate the pace, frustrating Montreal’s attack and limiting quality scoring opportunities.
Andrei Svechnikov added the finishing touch with an empty-net goal with 1:54 remaining, scoring for the second consecutive game to seal the 4-0 victory.
Gostisbehere and Ehlers each contributed two assists for Carolina, which continued to showcase the depth and balance that made it the No. 1 seed in both the Metropolitan Division and the Eastern Conference.
The Canadiens, the No. 3 seed from the Atlantic Division, now face elimination after dropping three straight games for the first time this postseason. Montreal had previously survived back-to-back seven game series victories in the opening two rounds without losing consecutive games.
Now, the Hurricanes head home with a chance to finish the series and punch their ticket to the Stanley Cup Final for the first time in two decades.
