England opened their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign in thrilling fashion, overcoming a spirited Croatia side 4-2 in a pulsating Group L encounter at Dallas. Led by a magnificent all-around performance from captain Harry Kane, the Three Lions survived two Croatian comebacks before pulling away in the second half to claim three valuable points.
Thomas Tuchel’s men made the perfect start when Kane converted a retaken penalty in the 12th minute. The Bayern Munich striker saw his initial effort saved, but after an infringement prompted a retake, he abandoned his trademark stuttered run-up and confidently slotted home to give England an early lead.
Croatia, however, refused to be intimidated. The 2018 World Cup finalists gradually settled into the contest and found an equalizer in the 36th minute through Martin Baturina. The lead lasted only until first-half stoppage time. Croatia produced one of the finest moves of the match, slicing through England’s defense before Petar Musa applied the finishing touch to make it 2-2 and send the teams into the break level after an entertaining opening 45 minutes.
England regained control almost immediately after the restart. Two minutes into the second half, Jude Bellingham collected a clever pass from Elliot Anderson and drove forward before firing a low effort across goalkeeper Dominik Livaković. The shot clipped the far post on its way into the net, restoring England’s lead at 3-2 and giving the European side renewed momentum.
From that point, England dominated proceedings. Livaković was forced into a remarkable spell of goalkeeping, making six saves in a frantic five-minute stretch as England repeatedly threatened to extend their advantage. The Croatian goalkeeper’s heroics kept his side within touching distance, but the pressure eventually proved too much.
With five minutes remaining, substitute Marcus Rashford delivered the decisive blow. Cutting inside from the flank, the forward curled a superb finish beyond Livaković to seal a 4-2 victory and ensure England began their World Cup journey with maximum points.
While Bellingham and Rashford played key roles, the night belonged to Kane. His two goals brought him alongside fellow tournament stars such as Erling Haaland, Lionel Messi and Kylian Mbappé on the World Cup scoring charts, but his influence stretched far beyond finding the net.
The England captain continually dropped deep to link play, orchestrated attacks, and even contributed defensively. In injury time, Kane highlighted his commitment with a crucial block to deny Joško Gvardiol and preserve England’s two-goal cushion. It was another reminder of why he remains indispensable for both club and country.
The victory sends England to the top of Group L and provides a strong foundation ahead of their next fixture against Ghana in Boston on June 23. Croatia will look to bounce back when they face Panama in Toronto on the same day.
For England, the opening test was far from straightforward, but with Kane leading from the front and a wealth of attacking talent supporting him, Tuchel’s side left Dallas with three points and an early statement of World Cup intent.
