Major Trump Ally Devin Nunes Steps Down as Head of Trump Media & Technology Group

One of President Trump’s most ardent supporters just caught a bad one. Devin Nunes is stepping aside from his position as CEO of Trump Media & Technology Group. This is the parent “umbrella” company of Truth Social, Trump’s social media company that he loves to send messages to the world with instead of X. In a sense, it is his competition to X or Facebook.

Who Is Devin Nunes?

Devin Nunes began his political career in the early 2000s, first as a state-level official and then winning election to the U.S. House of Representatives in 2002, representing California’s 21st (later 22nd) congressional district. A Republican, he built a reputation as a conservative lawmaker with strong ties to rural and agricultural interests, while also rising in prominence on national security issues as a member of the House Intelligence Committee and eventually becoming its chairman.

During the presidency of Donald Trump, Nunes became one of Trump’s most visible allies in Congress, especially in defending the administration during investigations into Russian election interference and throughout Trump’s first impeachment.

After leaving Congress in 2022, Nunes became CEO of Trump Media & Technology Group, further cementing his close ties to Trump. So while he wasn’t an official member of the administration, he was one of Trump’s most important allies and defenders in Congress, particularly on intelligence and investigative matters.

Nunes Steps Aside

On Tuesday, Trump Media & Technology Group named an interim chief executive officer as Devin Nunes stepped aside, marking a leadership transition at the parent of Truth Social following recent board departures and steep financial losses in 2025.

The company appointed longtime advisor Kevin McGurn as the interim CEO, succeeding Nunes, who has led the company since 2022. McGurn brings more than two decades of experience across media, telecommunications and advertising technology, according to the company.

Trump Media Bleeds Cash

The step down comes as Trump Media continues to report significant revenue losses. The company posted a net loss of more than $712 million in 2025 according to its annual filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

Financial disclosures show expenses far outpaced revenue, including more than $576 million in operating costs. A substantial portion of the losses was tied to write-downs and losses related to digital assets, highlighting the company’s exposure to volatile investment areas.

Donald Trump Jr. was quoted as saying, “I want to thank Devin Nunes for his dedicated service to the Company over the past four years, and congratulate Kevin McGurn on his appointment as Interim CEO.”

Nunes said the transition comes as the company enters a new phase, adding it was “an appropriate time” for McGurn to take over leadership while he shifts focus to his other roles with Trump, including serving as chairman of the president’s Intelligence Advisory Board.

The leadership change follows a series of recent board departures disclosed in regulatory filings. Former U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer resigned from the board in March, and director Eric Swider stepped down earlier this month. The company said in both cases the exits were not due to any dispute with management.

Trump Media has its tentacles swimming in a few different tanks. Trump Media operates the Truth Social platform along with a streaming service called Truth+ and a fintech brand called Truth.Fi. It has sought to expand beyond social media into areas including financial services and digital assets as it looks to grow its business.

The company has framed the leadership transition as part of its next phase, with McGurn expected to guide operations and strategic initiatives moving forward.

This whole move seems more strategic than anything else. Nunes is a good guy. Nunes has been with Trump all the way, for better or for worse. It just seems like it was time for a change with someone who just might be better suited to the role that Nunes was at the helm of. Only time will tell.
