Man Found Naked Inside Rental Unit Linked to Theft of International Journalist’s Equipment
A bizarre series of events unfolded on Miami Beach this week when police investigating the theft of expensive broadcasting equipment discovered a naked man inside the same rental property that had been burglarized less than 24 hours earlier.
The suspect, identified as 29 year old Christian Diaz Moore, is now facing multiple criminal charges after allegedly fleeing from officers, running onto the grounds of a local temple, and assaulting a detective during a chaotic foot chase.
The incident began Monday afternoon near 79th Street on Miami Beach as detectives continued investigating a burglary reported the previous day. According to authorities, the victim was Leo Ortiz, a journalist from Spain who had traveled to South Florida to cover the 2026 FIFA World Cup for Spanish language media outlets. Ortiz reported that thousands of dollars worth of professional broadcasting equipment had been stolen from his short-term rental unit.
When investigators returned to the property Monday to continue processing the scene and gather additional evidence, they encountered an unexpected surprise. Police say they found Diaz Moore inside the rental unit completely naked. Rather than surrendering, authorities say Diaz Moore immediately fled through the rear of the property, sparking a foot chase through the surrounding neighborhood.
Chase Crosses Into Temple Grounds
As officers pursued him, Diaz Moore reportedly grabbed a pair of red shorts before running onto the campus of Temple Menorah. Temple security guard Joshua Estes said he quickly realized the situation could become dangerous as the suspect entered an area where several families were gathered.
According to Estes, a group of mothers and four young children were outside when the suspect arrived on the property. Recognizing the potential threat, he immediately moved the families inside the building while warning them that law enforcement was actively pursuing a suspect. Moments later, Miami Beach police officers converged on the temple grounds.
Detective Assaulted During Arrest
Authorities say Diaz Moore violently resisted arrest after officers caught up with him. During the struggle, investigators allege that Diaz Moore struck and punched a detective attempting to take him into custody. The confrontation ultimately ended near the same location where the children had been standing only minutes earlier.
Temple security officials said the quick actions taken to move families indoors likely prevented a far more dangerous situation from unfolding. After a brief but intense struggle, officers successfully subdued Diaz Moore and transported him to jail.
Charges Filed
Miami Beach Police charged Diaz Moore with:
- Burglary
- Resisting an Officer With Violence
- Battery on a Police Officer
He remains in custody at a Miami-Dade County detention facility.
Detectives Still Investigating Equipment Theft
While Diaz Moore was discovered inside the same rental property connected to the burglary investigation, authorities have not publicly stated whether he is responsible for the theft of Ortiz’s equipment. That question remains a key focus of the ongoing investigation. Police have not yet announced whether any of the stolen broadcasting equipment has been recovered or whether additional charges may be forthcoming.
For Ortiz, the theft represents a significant setback as he prepares to cover one of the world’s largest sporting events. For investigators, the unusual circumstances surrounding Diaz Moore’s arrest have only added another layer of mystery to an already bizarre case. Detectives continue working to determine whether the suspect’s presence inside the rental property was directly connected to the original burglary or if another explanation exists. The investigation remains active.
