No. 25 Missouri Dominates No. 8 Florida 45-17 Behind Huge Day From Jamal Roberts

Tigers End Nine Game Losing Streak Against Ranked Opponents

No. 25 Missouri delivered one of its most impressive performances of the season Saturday, overwhelming No. 8 Florida 45-17 behind a dominant rushing performance from Jamal Roberts and a sharp outing from quarterback Austin Simmons.

Simmons threw for 340 yards and two touchdowns, while Roberts ran for 211 yards and three scores as Missouri piled up 560 yards of offense. The victory snapped the Tigers’ nine-game losing streak against ranked opponents and gave coach Eli Drinkwitz his first regular-season victory over a top-10 team in 11 tries.

Missouri improved to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in SEC play after rebounding from last week’s late collapse against Mississippi State. The Tigers instead controlled the game from the outset against a Florida team that had entered the matchup averaging 532.8 yards per game.

Missouri’s Offense Overwhelms Florida

Simmons was particularly effective in the first half, completing 16 of 21 passes for 238 yards and two touchdowns before halftime. He consistently found open receivers all over the field, including Donovan Olugbode on a 47-yard touchdown strike that extended Missouri’s lead to 10-3.

Later in the half, Simmons connected with Caleb Goodie Jr. for the first touchdown reception of Goodie’s career. Cayden Lee also played a major role in the passing attack, finishing with eight catches for 110 yards. Missouri’s offense continued to produce after halftime, but Roberts ultimately became the game’s biggest difference-maker.

Jamal Roberts Runs Wild

Roberts added a short touchdown run immediately after Missouri received the second-half kickoff, and the Tigers quickly forced Florida into another three-and-out. Blake Craig then drilled a 52-yard field goal to push Missouri’s advantage to 30-10 late in the third quarter.

The decisive sequence began on the penultimate play of the quarter. Roberts broke free from a pileup and raced 76 yards before being pushed out at the Florida 2-yard line. He finished the drive by powering into the end zone on the first play of the fourth quarter, and Missouri added a successful two-point conversion to make it 38-10.

Roberts wasn’t finished. A couple of minutes later, he broke loose for an 80-yard touchdown run, putting an exclamation point on Missouri’s rout and bringing his rushing total to 211 yards with three touchdowns.

Florida’s High-Powered Offense Stalls

The loss was a stunning setback for Florida, which entered the game at 4-0 after routing No. 4 Mississippi the previous week. Quarterback Aaron Philo finished with 197 passing yards and a touchdown, but much of his production came with the Gators already trailing by a significant margin.

Florida had averaged more than 532 yards of offense through its first four games but managed only 325 yards against Missouri.

The Tigers’ defensive game plan centered heavily on stopping Jadan Baugh, who had emerged as one of the nation’s top rushers and had received early Heisman Trophy attention after scoring 11 rushing touchdowns in his first four games.

Baugh’s first carry went for 12 yards, but Missouri essentially shut him down from there. He carried 11 more times and gained just one additional yard, finishing with 13 yards on 12 attempts.

Missouri Controls Crucial Stretch Around Halftime

One of the game’s biggest turning points came just before and immediately after halftime. Florida went three-and-out late in the first half, allowing Missouri to take possession with 1:33 remaining. Craig then connected on a 50-yard field goal as time expired to give the Tigers a 20-10 halftime advantage.

Missouri received the opening kickoff of the second half and quickly extended its lead with Roberts’ touchdown run. After forcing another Florida punt, Craig added his second long field goal of the game to make it 30-10.

From there, Missouri never allowed the Gators back into the game. The Tigers even began mockingly chomping at Florida as the rout unfolded, a fitting celebration against a program that has historically struggled at Faurot Field. Florida has now lost four of its last five games at Missouri’s home stadium, although Saturday’s defeat was far more decisive than the previous meetings.

What’s Next for Florida and Missouri?

Florida falls to 4-1 overall and 2-1 in SEC play following the disappointing performance. The Gators will look to rebound next Saturday when they face South Carolina. Missouri, meanwhile, moves to 4-1 overall and 1-1 in conference play and gains significant momentum from its statement victory over one of the SEC’s highest-ranked teams. The Tigers return to action next Saturday against Texas A&M.
