Norway Beats Brazil 2-1 as Erling Haaland’s Late Double Sends Norway to Historic World Cup Quarterfinal

2026 FIFA World Cup delivered one of its biggest upsets on Sunday as Norway shocked five-time champions Brazil 2-1 in East Rutherford, New Jersey, thanks to a sensational late brace from Erling Haaland that booked Norway’s place in the World Cup quarterfinals for the first time in history.

The Manchester City striker once again proved why he is regarded as one of the world’s most lethal finishers, scoring his sixth and seventh goals of the tournament during a dramatic final 11 minutes at MetLife Stadium. Brazil managed only a stoppage-time penalty from Neymar, but it came far too late to prevent a stunning elimination.

The victory marks a historic achievement for manager Ståle Solbakken and his squad, who have now reached the World Cup quarterfinals in their first appearance at the tournament in 28 years. Remarkably, Norway also maintained its unbeaten World Cup record against Brazil, having famously defeated the South Americans 2-1 during the group stage of the 1998 tournament.

Norway believed they had made the perfect start when midfielder Patrick Berg found the net inside the opening minutes, only for the goal to be correctly ruled out for offside.

Brazil responded by earning a golden opportunity in the 14th minute after Kristoffer Ajer brought down Matheus Cunha inside the penalty area.

Moroccan-born American referee Ismail Elfath initially allowed play to continue before overturning his decision after a VAR review and pointing to the spot.

However, Bruno Guimarães failed to capitalize, striking a weak penalty that was comfortably saved by Norwegian goalkeeper Ørjan Nyland.

The penalty save shifted momentum and gave Norway confidence against a Brazilian side that had looked the more dangerous. Nyland produced an inspired performance throughout the afternoon.

The veteran goalkeeper denied Gabriel Martinelli by getting a crucial touch to a dangerous cross before making another excellent stop from Vinícius Júnior, whose low strike seemed destined for the bottom corner.

Norway’s best chance before halftime came through captain Martin Ødegaard, whose precise effort forced Alisson Becker into an impressive save. Despite Brazil creating more opportunities, the teams entered halftime scoreless.

The pace slowed after the break as soaring temperatures began to affect both sides.

Brazil appeared content to absorb pressure while looking to strike on the counterattack.

Substitute Endrick squandered a golden one-on-one opportunity after an excellent through ball from Vinícius Júnior, while Rayan forced yet another save from Nyland.

Haaland nearly connected with a brilliant cross from Ajer before Brazil manager Carlo Ancelotti introduced Neymar for only his second substitute appearance of the tournament in hopes of finding a breakthrough.

Substitute Andreas Schjelderup first tested Alisson with a sharp effort at the near post before providing the moment that changed the match.

In the 79th minute, Schjelderup delivered a perfectly weighted cross into the penalty area where Haaland rose above Arsenal defender Gabriel Magalhães and thundered a header past Alisson to send the Norwegian supporters into celebration.

The goal extended Haaland’s remarkable scoring streak to 14 consecutive international appearances.

Brazil desperately searched for an equalizer, but Nyland continued his heroics, producing an extraordinary save after Ajer’s awkward back-pass nearly caught Norway out.

Then came the decisive moment. In the 90th minute, Schjelderup again played provider, finding Haaland just outside the penalty area. The striker took one touch before firing an unstoppable low drive into the bottom corner to double Norway’s advantage and effectively seal one of the greatest victories in the nation’s football history.

Brazil earned a late lifeline deep into stoppage time when substitute Leo Østigård fouled Casemiro inside the area.

Neymar calmly converted the penalty, but there was no time left for another comeback as the final whistle confirmed Brazil’s earliest World Cup exit in years.

For Norway, the victory represents a defining moment in the country’s football history. Led by the prolific Haaland, the creativity of Ødegaard, and the brilliance of Nyland in goal, the Scandinavians have emerged as one of the tournament’s biggest surprise contenders.

Brazil, meanwhile, leaves the tournament full of regret after failing to convert early chances, including Guimarães’ missed penalty, and ultimately paying the price against a clinical Norwegian attack.

With Haaland in unstoppable form and Norway brimming with confidence, the Scandinavian nation now advances to the World Cup quarterfinals, where their remarkable run will continue as they chase an unprecedented place in the semifinals.
