Road to the Kentucky Derby Heats Up: 75th Florida Derby Features Chief Wallabee, Commandment, and Nearly

The 2026 Road to the Kentucky Derby intensifies this Saturday, March 28, as Gulfstream Park hosts the 75th running of the Grade 1, $1 million Florida Derby. This 1 1/8-mile showdown for 3-year-olds, which debuted in 1952 and has produced the winners of 63 Triple Crown races, offers 200 qualifying points on a 100-50-25-15-10 scale to the top five finishers, setting the stage for the first major Kentucky Derby (G1) prep of the season.

The Florida Derby has drawn a competitive field, headlined by three early-season stars: Fountain of Youth (G2) runner-up Chief Wallabee, Fountain of Youth winner Commandment, and Holy Bull (G3) champion Nearly.

Chief Wallabee – Favorite from Post 2

Michael and Katherine Ball’s Chief Wallabee, a bay son of 2014 Florida Derby winner Constitution, enters Saturday’s race as the narrow 2-1 morning-line favorite. Trained by Hall of Famer Bill Mott, Chief Wallabee is just two starts into his career. After breaking his maiden in a seven-furlong debut on Jan. 10, he rallied from far back to finish a neck behind Commandment in the 1 1/16-mile Fountain of Youth on Feb. 28. Junior Alvarado, aboard for both of the colt’s starts, will ride from post 2 as Mott seeks his first Florida Derby victory after finishing second last year with eventual Horse of the Year Sovereignty.

Commandment – Fountain of Youth Winner from Post 4

Wathnan Racing’s Commandment, trained by Brad Cox, is second on the morning line at 5-2. By Into Mischief, Commandment broke his maiden in his second career start last fall in Kentucky before a commanding 6 3/4-length win in Gulfstream’s Mucho Macho Man Stakes over a one-turn mile on Jan. 3. Flavien Prat will ride the colt from post 4 as Cox aims for a repeat of last year’s mild upset victory in the Florida Derby with Sovereignty.

Nearly – Holy Bull Champion from Post 6

Centennial Farms’ Nearly, a Not This Time colt trained by Todd Pletcher, brings a three-race winning streak into the Florida Derby. After finishing sixth in his debut last fall at Aqueduct, Nearly has been undefeated at Gulfstream, capturing a maiden over Florida-breds in November, a winners’ race on Jan. 2, and the Holy Bull on Jan. 31, all by a combined 20 lengths. Rated third on the morning line at 3-1, Hall of Famer John Velazquez, who has six Florida Derby victories, will ride from post 6 as Pletcher seeks his record eighth Florida Derby win.

Other Notable Contenders

  • The Puma (9-2, post 8): Trained by Gustavo Delgado for OGMA Investments, JR Ranch, and High Step Racing, The Puma won the Tampa Bay Derby (G3) after placing in the Sam F. Davis, making him a threat to upset the favorites. Javier Castellano gets the mount.
  • Wayne’s Law (15-1, post 3): A son of 2020 Florida Derby winner Tiz the Law, trained by Amador Sanchez, finished second to Renegade in the Sam F. Davis. Marcos Meneses will ride.
  • Timeless Victory (20-1, post 7): Six-time starter for Ed Plesa Jr., with two wins at Gulfstream, including a six-length optional claiming win on March 1. Jose Morelos rides.
  • Gregarious (50-1, post 9): Owned and trained by Jose Castro, making just his second start after a runner-up debut. Rajiv Maragh aboard.
  • Albus (20-1, post 1): Pin Oak Stud’s last-out winner at Tampa Bay Downs, worked a half-mile in 49.75 seconds.
  • Redland Rebels (15-1, post 5): Second by a neck in Gulfstream’s Kitten’s Joy Stakes and cross-entered in the Arkansas Derby, trained by Patrick Biancone.

Florida Derby Day – A Full Slate

Florida Derby Day features 14 races, including 10 stakes (five graded) worth $2.675 million in purses. First post time is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. EDT, promising a full day of high-stakes action as 3-year-olds vie for their chance to earn Kentucky Derby qualifying points.

With Chief Wallabee, Commandment, and Nearly all seeking to establish themselves as legitimate Derby contenders, the 75th Florida Derby is shaping up to be a marquee event on the 2026 Road to Louisville.
