Savannah Guthrie Speaks Directly to Her Mother’s Kidnappers as Search Intensifies in Arizona
The family of Today show co-anchor Savannah Guthrie is pleading for answers after her 84-year-old mother, Nancy Guthrie, disappeared from her Tucson, Arizona home over the weekend under circumstances authorities now say suggest possible abduction. Nancy Guthrie was last seen around 9:30 p.m. Saturday after family members dropped her off at her residence in the Catalina Foothills neighborhood. By Sunday morning, she was gone. Deputies responding to the home discovered what appeared to be blood droplets near the front door, immediately escalating concerns that she may have been taken during the night.
Law enforcement officials have emphasized that the investigation remains active and fluid. Arizona authorities on Wednesday denied media reports claiming they have identified a “prime suspect,” stating instead that investigators are pursuing hundreds of leads.
Guthrie Family Issues Emotional Plea
On Wednesday evening, Savannah Guthrie and other family members released a recorded video statement on social media, speaking directly to whoever may be holding her mother. In the video, Guthrie thanked supporters for their prayers, saying she believes her mother can hear them. She described Nancy Guthrie as a woman defined by compassion and wisdom.
“She is a fiercely loving woman of goodness and light,” Guthrie said through tears.
“Talk to her and you’ll see.”
Guthrie went on to explain that her mother has serious medical conditions and requires daily medication to survive and manage severe pain. Without that medication, the family fears she is suffering.
Ransom Claims and Direct Message to Captors
During the statement, Guthrie addressed reports that multiple media outlets have received a ransom letter allegedly connected to her mother’s disappearance. Reading from a prepared statement, Guthrie said the family is prepared to communicate, but only if there is proof her mother is alive.
“We are ready to talk,” she said. “However, we live in a world where voices and images are easily manipulated. We need to know without a doubt that she is alive and that you have her. We want to hear from you and we are ready to listen. Please reach out to us.”
Authorities have not publicly confirmed the authenticity of any ransom communication.
Investigation Ongoing, Search Expands
The Pima County Sheriff’s Department provided limited updates Wednesday, saying detectives are continuing to interview anyone who had contact with Nancy Guthrie over the weekend. Law enforcement was also observed conducting grid searches in rugged terrain in neighboring Maricopa County. Sheriff Chris Nanos said investigators are reviewing video evidence from nearby cameras but declined to provide specifics.
“That’s all been submitted and we’re doing our best with the companies that own those cameras or built those cameras,” Nanos said.
Officials confirmed there were signs of forced entry at the home and said Nancy Guthrie has limited mobility. Investigators do not believe she left voluntarily. According to dispatcher audio from Sunday, Guthrie has high blood pressure, a pacemaker, and heart issues, further intensifying concerns about her well-being.
Federal Response and White House Involvement
The White House confirmed Wednesday that President Donald Trump spoke directly with Savannah Guthrie following the disappearance. In a statement posted to Truth Social, Trump said federal resources were being mobilized immediately.
“I spoke with Savannah Guthrie, and let her know that I am directing ALL Federal Law Enforcement to be at the family’s, and Local Law Enforcement’s, complete disposal, IMMEDIATELY,” Trump wrote.
“We are deploying all resources to get her mother home safely.”
Officials have not disclosed whether federal agents are now formally embedded in the investigation, but law enforcement sources indicated coordination is ongoing.
