Sierra Leone Surges from Last to First in Thrilling Whitney Victory at Saratoga

Champion 3-Year-Old Colt of 2024, Sierra Leone, silenced his Saratoga critics in emphatic style Saturday, launching a dramatic last-to-first charge to win the Grade 1, $1 million Whitney Stakes at Saratoga Race Course. The victory came in the 98th running of the prestigious race and secured Sierra Leone a coveted spot in the $7 million Breeders’ Cup Classic on November 1 at Del Mar.

Owned by the powerhouse partnership of Peter Brant, Mrs. John Magnier, Michael Tabor, Derrick Smith, Westerberg, and Brook Smith, Sierra Leone’s performance erased any lingering doubts about his affinity for the Spa, where he had previously gone winless in three starts. The 4-year-old colt surged down the center of the track in mid-stretch, sweeping past Fierceness and turning back a stiff challenge from Highland Falls to score by one length in 1:48.92 for 1 1/8 miles on a fast main track.

“This is a fully polished, high-level racehorse right now,” said trainer Chad Brown, who hails from nearby Mechanicville, New York. “He’s always run in the toughest races here—Travers, the Belmont Stakes. He just hadn’t gotten it done until today, but he showed in the Breeders’ Cup Classic and now again, he’s the real deal.”

Brown, a five-time Eclipse Award winner, enjoyed a banner day with four victories on the 13-race card, including a finale score with Peak Hype. Jockey Flavien Prat was equally dominant, notching his fourth win of the afternoon aboard Sierra Leone.

The Whitney served as a high-stakes rematch between Sierra Leone and Fierceness, the 2023 2-Year-Old Champion. The two clashed multiple times in 2024, with Fierceness edging Sierra Leone in the Travers and Jim Dandy, only for Sierra Leone to roar back and defeat him in the Breeders’ Cup Classic last November. On Saturday, the rivalry saw another chapter tilt in favor of Sierra Leone.

Breaking last from the gate, Sierra Leone trailed early as 70-1 longshot and stablemate Contrary Thinking set the pace through fractions of 23.82 and 47.07. Mama’s Gold took over the lead midway, while Fierceness sat in a stalking third under Hall of Fame rider John Velazquez, with Highland Falls and White Abarrio in close pursuit.

Skippylongstocking made a bold inside bid to briefly take the lead entering the far turn, but it was short-lived as Fierceness regained momentum. Meanwhile, Sierra Leone, still trailing, was just beginning his methodical move.

In a sweeping four-wide rally, Prat found daylight for Sierra Leone turning for home. Fierceness clung to a narrow lead at the eighth pole, but Sierra Leone and Highland Falls loomed large. With powerful strides, Sierra Leone struck the front and fended off Highland Falls’ late surge to secure the win.

Final Order of Finish:

  1. Sierra Leone
  2. Highland Falls
  3. Disarm
  4. White Abarrio
  5. Fierceness
  6. Post Time
  7. Skippylongstocking
  8. Mama’s Gold
  9. Contrary Thinking

Sierra Leone’s win marked a major milestone—his first victory at Saratoga, and yet another key addition to an already glittering résumé. The colt’s value and legacy continue to soar as he now eyes a title defense in the Breeders’ Cup Classic.

Notably absent from the field was Fierceness’ stablemate Mindframe, scratched in favor of the Grade 1 Jockey Club Gold Cup later this month. Trainer Brad Cox took solace in Highland Falls’ performance in his second start off a layoff, calling it “a step forward” after the colt finished ninth in last year’s Breeders’ Cup.

With the win, Sierra Leone’s narrative has changed from one of questions to undeniable supremacy, and the road to Del Mar now runs squarely through him.
