The August Horrorscopes Are Here!
Welcome to the South Florida Media Monthly Horrorscopes, the only astrology column in South Florida honest enough to admit Mercury isn’t ruining your life. You are. Mercury is 48 million miles away and would like to be excluded from this conversation.
August has arrived in South Florida, otherwise known as the month when walking from your front door to your car feels like crossing the surface of Venus wearing business casual. The ocean is bathwater, your electric bill looks like a ransom demand, and the mosquitoes have achieved air superiority. Hurricane season is staring at us from across the Atlantic like a drunk guy at a Waffle House who hasn’t decided whether he wants pancakes or violence.
Meanwhile, every South Floridian is performing the same sacred August ritual: checking the weather app, seeing thunderstorms all week, completely ignoring it, and making outdoor plans anyway. This month, the stars predict questionable hookups, financial irresponsibility, HOA warfare, Publix encounters, parking lot rage, suspicious boat invitations, and at least one person posting an inspirational quote on Instagram immediately after doing something profoundly stupid.
Apply SPF 50, update your hurricane supplies, and stop texting people after midnight. The universe has spoken, and unfortunately, it sounds like somebody arguing with a tow truck driver in Brickell.
HORRORSCOPES™
Your Future Is Terrible… But At Least It’s Funny.
♈ Aries
You wake up with the dangerous feeling that today is going to be productive. It isn’t. By 11:30 a.m., you’ve started six projects, finished none of them, ordered something unnecessary from Amazon, and somehow gotten into an argument on Facebook with a retired guy from Boca named Gary. Gary has 14 followers, wraparound sunglasses in his profile picture, and absolutely nothing to lose. By dinner, you’re 37 comments deep explaining constitutional law to a man who thinks the moon landing was filmed at Sawgrass Mills. The stars say you could spend your evening doing literally anything else. You choose Gary.
♉ Taurus
Financial discipline enters your life this month and leaves approximately 45 minutes later. You promised yourself you’d stop spending money, which was an excellent plan until you discovered something called Sunday brunch. Now you’ve spent $190 on eggs, champagne, valet parking, and a tiny piece of avocado placed artistically beside toast. Your server asks whether you’d like another round. Your checking account screams no. You say yes. Later that evening you’ll open your banking app, stare silently at the screen, close it, reopen it as if perhaps the numbers have reconsidered, and finally decide this is a problem for September Taurus. Excellent financial planning.
♊ Gemini
Someone from your past is coming back into your life. Unfortunately, they’re still an idiot. At 12:47 a.m., your phone lights up with the most terrifying three-word message in modern dating: “Hey, you up?” You know exactly where this road goes because you’ve driven it before. There are potholes, red flags, unpaid parking tickets, emotional damage, and apparently none of that matters because they’re still ridiculously attractive. By morning, you’re explaining to your best friend why “this time feels different.” Your best friend has heard this speech four times. Even your dog looks disappointed.
♋ Cancer
You’re feeling emotional this month, Cancer, which for you is roughly as surprising as finding an iguana near a canal. Someone doesn’t respond to your text for 22 minutes, and your brain immediately launches a federal investigation. Did you say something wrong? Are they angry? Did they meet someone else? Are they dead? Relax. They’re at Publix. Unfortunately, while waiting for their response, you’ve already deleted the conversation, unfollowed them, followed them again, posted a suspiciously specific Instagram Story about “protecting your energy,” and told three friends you’re completely done with them. Then they text: “Sorry, was getting chicken tender subs.” True love survives another day.
♌ Leo
Your natural desire for attention reaches dangerous levels this August. You post a thirst trap and pretend you “just liked the lighting.” Sure. NASA has photographed galaxies with less preparation. You took 74 pictures, changed outfits twice, moved a lamp, cleaned one corner of your apartment, and strategically positioned a book you’ve never read in the background so people think you’re intellectual. The photo works, and your ex watches the Story within three minutes. Mission accomplished. Unfortunately, so does your mother, who publicly comments, “Beautiful sweetheart!!! ❤️❤️❤️” Delete Instagram. Your reign is over.
♍ Virgo
You decide it’s finally time to organize your life, beginning innocently enough with cleaning one kitchen drawer. Six hours later, every possession you own is sitting on the floor while you angrily hold a phone charger from 2014 and demand to know why you’ve kept it for twelve years. You create labeled bins, spreadsheets, and a filing system so advanced the Pentagon calls asking whether you’re available Tuesday. Then someone moves one thing. One. Thing. You stare at them with the cold fury of a condo board president who just discovered an unauthorized welcome mat. August teaches you an important lesson: you don’t need organization. You need control.
♎ Libra
Your inability to make decisions finally becomes a public safety issue. Someone asks where you want dinner and you say, “Anywhere.” They suggest Italian. Not really feeling Italian. Mexican? Too heavy. Sushi? You had sushi Tuesday. Steakhouse? Too expensive. After 45 minutes, everyone hates you and you’re still hungry. Eventually, you settle on a restaurant nobody particularly wanted, arrive without a reservation, discover a 90-minute wait, and somehow blame everyone else for not planning ahead. You end the night eating Taco Bell in formal clothing. The stars tried.
♏ Scorpio
You’re radiating mysterious sexual energy this month. Unfortunately, your taste in people remains catastrophic. You meet someone gorgeous who has perfect teeth, incredible chemistry, and the kind of eye contact that immediately disables your critical thinking. There is only one problem: every story they tell contains the phrase “my crazy ex.” By the fourth crazy ex, basic mathematics suggests the common denominator may be sitting directly across from you. You notice this. You understand this. You proceed anyway. Scorpio doesn’t collect red flags. Scorpio sees red flags and thinks, “Cool. Six Flags.” Enjoy the roller coaster.
♐ Sagittarius
You announce you’re taking a “spontaneous weekend trip.” Nobody is surprised because you’ve been threatening to do this since Tuesday. You book the cheapest flight available, which naturally departs Fort Lauderdale at an hour usually reserved for fishermen, burglars, and people making catastrophic travel decisions. Your $89 ticket somehow becomes $347 after baggage, seat selection, airport food, parking, and one cocktail you bought because “vacation starts now.” You arrive exhausted and immediately announce, “We should totally move here.” You say this everywhere. Last month you wanted to move to Nashville. You spent nine hours there.
♑ Capricorn
Your work ethic becomes genuinely disturbing this month. Everyone else is mentally checked out for summer while you’re answering emails at 6:12 a.m. like the fate of Western civilization depends on a quarterly spreadsheet. Your coworker sends “Thanks!” and you reply with three paragraphs, two attachments, a calendar invitation, and proposed action items. They immediately regret acknowledging you. Eventually someone tells you to relax, so naturally you research relaxation techniques, create a relaxation schedule, and establish measurable quarterly relaxation objectives. Congratulations. You’ve turned relaxing into work. Even your therapist needs a vacation.
♒ Aquarius
You become obsessed with a new conspiracy theory this month. Not a dangerous one, just a profoundly stupid one. You spend four hours investigating why every Publix seems designed slightly differently and become convinced there’s a hidden psychological reason the bakery is positioned where it is. Soon you’re explaining “supermarket behavioral architecture” to people who absolutely did not ask. Your friends beg you to stop. You refuse. Then you discover Reddit, and it’s over. By sunrise you’ve joined six communities, downloaded a 47-page PDF, and are referring to something called “the rotisserie chicken placement theory.” Please go outside.
♓ Pisces
You’re looking for signs from the universe this month, and unfortunately, you’ll accept basically anything. You see 11:11 on your phone? Sign. A butterfly lands nearby? Sign. Your favorite song plays at Publix? Definitely a sign. Your ex likes a photo from three weeks ago? THIS IS IT. No. That is not the universe. That is a bored person scrolling Instagram while sitting on the toilet. By Saturday night, however, you’ve ignored this horoscope completely and are drinking cocktails beside the Intracoastal with someone whose last name you don’t know. At 2:06 a.m., you look across the water and whisper, “Everything happens for a reason.” Sometimes, Pisces. Sometimes you’re just drunk in Fort Lauderdale.
Until September…
August will test your relationships, finances, air-conditioning system, liver, patience, and ability to merge onto I-95 without briefly losing faith in humanity. Remember: astrology cannot predict everything. It cannot tell you when the next tropical system will form, explain why Miami drivers treat turn signals like classified government information, or tell you why you keep answering texts from people you personally described as “toxic.” Some mysteries are simply beyond science.
Stay hydrated. Tip your bartender. Don’t fight with your HOA. Never trust a South Florida parking sign after dark. And if everything goes horribly wrong this month, don’t blame us.
Blame your zodiac sign. That’s what it’s there for…
