Southwest Miami-Dade School Placed On Lockdown During Police Activity

Miami-Dade School On Lockdown

A Southwest Miami-Dade middle school was placed on lockdown Thursday as law enforcement investigated police activity outside the campus. The situation prompted a precautionary response at the school while authorities worked at the nearby scene.

Police Activity Near School

Jorge Mas Canosa Middle School was placed on lockdown after police activity was reported in the area near the campus. Officials said the situation was not related to an incident occurring inside the school. The precaution was put in place to keep students and staff inside the building while law enforcement handled the activity nearby. Students remained in their classrooms during the lockdown as authorities investigated.

Officer Involved Shooting

The police response was connected to a confrontation involving a Florida Department of Law Enforcement agent, according to authorities. Investigators said the agent was inside a vehicle when a person approached and began striking the vehicle. The agent got out of the vehicle, and authorities said a physical confrontation followed. Investigators said the person knocked the agent to the ground and got on top of him. The agent then fired his weapon, striking the person. The person was later pronounced dead. Officers and Miami-Dade Fire Rescue personnel responded and attempted lifesaving measures.

Lockdown Lifted

The school lockdown was eventually lifted after authorities determined there was no continuing threat to students or staff. The incident did not occur on school property. The investigation into the shooting remains ongoing. Authorities are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the confrontation, including what led to the initial encounter between the agent and the person who was killed. Parents and students were understandably concerned as information about the police activity spread, but officials emphasized that the lockdown was a precaution taken because of the activity outside the school. The investigation remains active, and additional information may be released as authorities continue reviewing the incident.
