Stray Bullet In Miami Hits Ten Year Old Girl In The Back Of The Head Killing Her

10-Year-Old Girl Killed by Stray Bullet During New Year’s Celebration in Miami-Dade

MIAMI-DADE, FL — A 10-year-old girl celebrating New Year’s Day with her family tragically lost her life early Wednesday morning after being struck by a stray bullet.

The victim, identified as Yanelis Munuguia, had been enjoying the holiday festivities when she suddenly collapsed shortly after 1:30 a.m., according to the Miami-Dade Police Department. Her parents initially believed she had fainted, but upon examining her, they discovered a wound to the back of her head.

Yanelis’ parents immediately placed her in their vehicle and called emergency services while searching for a hospital. Hialeah Fire Rescue intercepted them near Palm Avenue and West 3rd Street and transported the young girl to Jackson Ryder Trauma Center, where she was pronounced dead.

Preliminary Investigation

Detectives from the Miami-Dade Police Department’s Homicide Bureau revealed that Yanelis was struck by a stray bullet fired into the air from an unknown location. It is believed the bullet was part of a celebratory gunfire incident, a dangerous and illegal practice often associated with New Year’s festivities.

Community Reaction

The tragic death has shaken the local community. Residents in the area expressed heartbreak and frustration over the preventable loss of such a young life.

“This is every parent’s worst nightmare,” one neighbor said. “Celebratory gunfire is reckless, and now it’s taken an innocent child from her family.”

Law enforcement officials have reiterated the dangers of firing weapons into the air, as bullets that are shot upward can travel significant distances before descending with lethal force.

Call for Information

Authorities are urging anyone with information about the incident to come forward. Tipsters can contact Miami-Dade Crime Stoppers at 305-471-TIPS (8477). Anonymous tips may also be eligible for a cash reward.

A Plea for Responsibility

Detectives emphasized the importance of public safety and responsibility, particularly during holiday celebrations. Miami-Dade Police continue to investigate, working to identify the individual responsible for the stray bullet that claimed Yanelis Munuguia’s life.

Her family, just days removed from celebrating her 10th birthday on December 26, is now mourning an unimaginable loss. A candlelight vigil is being planned by community members to honor Yanelis’ memory and raise awareness about the dangers of celebratory gunfire.

This incident marks a devastating start to the new year and serves as a sobering reminder of the need for vigilance and caution during holiday celebrations.
