Powerball Winner’s Florida Celebration Turns Into Violent Arrest
ST. PETE BEACH, Fla. — What began as a victory trip to Florida’s Gulf Coast ended in handcuffs for a Kentucky man who had just claimed a $167.3 million Powerball jackpot. Authorities say 50-year-old James Farthing’s celebration spiraled out of control at a St. Pete Beach bar, culminating in a physical altercation with deputies and multiple criminal charges.
From Lottery Triumph to Barroom Clash
According to the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office, Farthing was staying at the TradeWinds Resort when a heated argument broke out late Sunday with another patron who questioned his claims about winning the massive lottery prize. Witnesses told deputies that Farthing had been boasting about his newfound fortune before allegedly punching the man in the face. Deputies were called to the scene, but the confrontation escalated quickly. Sheriff’s Office spokesperson Amanda Sinni said Farthing “became physically aggressive” while officers attempted to intervene.
Deputy Struck, Taser Deployed
Authorities allege that in the process of trying to kick his rival, Farthing struck a deputy in the face. Body camera footage reviewed by investigators reportedly shows Farthing then attempting to flee before being subdued with a Taser and tackled to the ground.
“He was given multiple commands to comply and refused,” Sinni stated. “The Taser was deployed to gain control and prevent further injury to anyone on scene.”
Girlfriend Also Arrested
Farthing’s girlfriend, 42-year-old Jacqueline Fightmaster, was also taken into custody on a charge of disorderly intoxication. Deputies said she was yelling profanities and interfering with the arrest.
Legal Trouble Overshadows Jackpot
Court records show Farthing now faces charges including battery on a law enforcement officer, resisting arrest with violence, simple battery, and violation of parole. He posted bond and was released pending trial.
Just days earlier, Farthing had told reporters he planned to split his winnings with his mother, calling the jackpot “a blessing beyond words.” Now, prosecutors are preparing to present eyewitness accounts and deputy body camera video as key evidence in a case that has turned the lottery winner into a criminal defendant.
