Miami Beach Memorial Day Celebration Turns Violent After Teen Allegedly Chases Woman With Knife on Crowded Beach
What began as a typical Memorial Day gathering on the sand in Miami Beach reportedly spiraled into chaos Sunday after an 18-year-old man allegedly threatened to “gut” a woman before chasing her across the beach with a knife in front of horrified bystanders. According to Miami Beach Police Department, the incident unfolded during the busy holiday weekend as large crowds packed South Florida beaches for Memorial Day celebrations.
Police identified the suspect as 18-year-old Misael Algel Aguilar Santurio of Miami-Dade County. Investigators say the confrontation began inside a group of friends hanging out together on the sand when Aguilar Santurio allegedly started throwing sand at other members of the group. Witnesses told police the situation escalated after one woman threw sand back at him. That is when, according to the arrest report, Aguilar Santurio allegedly became enraged and threatened the victim, telling her he was “going to gut her” before pulling a pocket knife from his backpack. Police say he then began chasing the woman across the crowded beach. The victim, identified as Yarielys Riobo, later described the terrifying moments to reporters.
“I was scared,” Riobo said. “All I was doing was backing up, all I was doing was watching him, because if I turned my back he would have launched at me.”
Authorities said multiple people nearby intervened before the situation turned deadly. Two men from the group reportedly tackled Aguilar Santurio to the ground while another individual removed the knife from his possession until officers arrived at the scene. The incident unfolded during one of the busiest beach weekends of the year in South Florida, where tens of thousands of tourists and locals flooded Miami Beach for holiday gatherings, nightlife, and waterfront events.
Violent confrontations during crowded holiday weekends have become an increasing concern for law enforcement agencies across South Florida in recent years, particularly in Miami Beach, where officials have repeatedly struggled to balance tourism driven nightlife with public safety concerns. The city has implemented curfews, heightened police deployments, restricted parking measures, and beach patrol crackdowns during major holidays after multiple previous incidents involving shootings, assaults, and disorderly crowds during spring break and Memorial Day periods. Sunday’s knife incident could have ended far worse. Riobo said she already believed Aguilar Santurio had a history of anger problems prior to the confrontation.
“I don’t understand. I knew he had anger issues from the beginning,” she said.
Police arrested Aguilar Santurio at the scene. He is now facing charges including aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and resisting an officer without violence. As of Monday, jail records showed he remained in custody pending further court proceedings. The investigation remains ongoing.
