Maddison, Marmoush and Davies Lead Tottenham to Long Awaited Victory
Tottenham Hotspur climbed off the bottom of the Premier League table after earning their first top flight victory of the season, defeating Coventry City 3-1 on Monday behind goals from James Maddison, Omar Marmoush and Ben Davies.
Maddison opened the scoring with a spectacular long range strike in the 14th minute, giving Tottenham an early lead against his boyhood club. Coventry responded through Jack Rudoni shortly after halftime, but Marmoush restored Spurs’ advantage with his first goal for the club before Davies sealed the victory in stoppage time.
The result ended Tottenham’s frustrating wait for a league win at the seventh attempt and provided a much-needed boost for manager Roberto De Zerbi. It was also an emotional night for Maddison and Dejan Kulusevski, who made his long awaited return after 526 days out with a serious patella injury.
Maddison Delivers a Moment of Magic
Tottenham entered the match at the bottom of the Premier League table and without four players who featured in the previous 1-1 draw against Manchester United. However, De Zerbi received a significant boost with Maddison making his first start in 536 days and Kulusevski returning to the matchday squad.
Despite the positive news, Spurs nearly conceded within the opening seconds. Goalkeeper Antonín Kinsky denied Brandon Thomas-Asante from a tight angle after just 11 seconds as Coventry immediately threatened to spoil the hosts’ evening. Tottenham struggled to settle early, with Kinsky fortunate to deal with a dangerous cross from Tatsuhiro Sakamoto before another Coventry attack forced a deflection over the crossbar.
Maddison provided the breakthrough in the 14th minute with a moment of individual brilliance. After a clever dummy created space, the Tottenham midfielder struck a first-time effort from approximately 22 yards, curling the ball over goalkeeper Carl Rushworth and into the top corner. Maddison celebrated with his trademark darts celebration as Tottenham took the lead, marking their first time ahead in a Premier League match this season.
Dominic Solanke briefly thought he had doubled the advantage, only for the offside flag to deny him a goal. Coventry continued to threaten, but Tottenham held firm through several dangerous moments. Jan Paul van Hecke helped thwart Sidiki Cherif, while Maddison saw another effort cleared and Solanke fired over the crossbar. Thomas-Asante also found space behind Tottenham’s defense late in the first half, but Micky van de Ven produced an outstanding last-ditch tackle to preserve the 1-0 advantage at halftime.
Coventry Fight Back Before Marmoush Restores the Lead
Coventry found their equalizer four minutes into the second half after capitalizing on a series of Tottenham defensive mistakes. Van Hecke gave away possession to trigger a counterattack, and Thomas-Asante saw his initial effort blocked. Rudoni reacted quickly to the rebound and fired home, beating Kinsky with a powerful follow-up to make it 1-1.
The goal threatened to extend Tottenham’s difficult start to the campaign, but De Zerbi’s side responded with greater urgency. Sandro Tonali sent two efforts over the crossbar as Spurs searched for another breakthrough. Marmoush eventually delivered in the 58th minute, scoring his first goal for Tottenham after joining the club on loan from Manchester City.
The Egyptian forward brushed off Milan van Ewijk before driving a powerful finish into the bottom corner. Rushworth could not keep out the shot, restoring Tottenham’s lead at 2-1 and giving the home crowd reason to believe a first league victory was within reach. The goal proved crucial as Tottenham attempted to manage a tense second half, although injuries to Andy Robertson and Tosin Adarabioyo added further complications.
Kulusevski Returns as Davies Seals the Win
One of the night’s most emotional moments arrived in the 87th minute when Kulusevski entered the match to a thunderous reception from the Tottenham supporters. The Swedish international had endured 526 days on the sidelines because of a patella injury, making his return a significant milestone for both the player and the club.
His first two touches were greeted by enormous cheers as the home crowd celebrated the return of a key attacking player. Tottenham still needed a decisive moment to remove any lingering doubt, and Davies provided it in stoppage time.
The long-serving defender struck a scuffed, low effort that found its way past Rushworth and into the net, securing a 3-1 victory and sparking further celebrations inside Tottenham Hotspur Stadium. The late goal ensured Spurs avoided a nervy finish and finally got their Premier League campaign moving in the right direction.
Tottenham Look to Build Momentum
The victory was particularly important for a Tottenham side that had struggled to find consistency and had entered Monday’s match at the bottom of the standings. Maddison’s return to the starting lineup, Marmoush’s first goal for the club and Kulusevski’s comeback offered encouraging signs for De Zerbi as he looks to turn the season around.
Tottenham also ended a difficult run at their home stadium, where victories had been hard to come by since Maddison and Kulusevski suffered their injuries in May 2025. For Coventry, Rudoni’s equalizer briefly raised hopes of taking something from the contest, but Tottenham’s response and late insurance goal proved decisive.
Spurs will now look to use their first Premier League win of the season as a foundation for improvement, with the performances of Maddison, Marmoush and the returning Kulusevski providing reasons for optimism.
