United States Opens Home World Cup with Emphatic 4-1 Victory Over Paraguay

The United States announced its arrival at the 2026 FIFA World Cup in emphatic fashion on Friday night, powering past Paraguay 4-1 in their Group D opener before a star-studded crowd in Los Angeles.

With Hollywood celebrities, sports icons, and fans from across the country filling the stadium, Mauricio Pochettino’s side delivered a performance worthy of the occasion, overwhelming Paraguay with attacking flair, relentless energy, and clinical finishing.

Leading the charge was Monaco striker Folarin Balogun, who scored twice in a dazzling first-half display to help the hosts make an early statement in their quest for World Cup glory on home soil.

The Americans wasted little time asserting themselves. Their pressure paid off in the opening stages when Weston McKennie whipped a dangerous cross into the penalty area. Paraguay midfielder Damián Bobadilla, attempting to clear the ball, inadvertently turned it into his own net to hand the United States a deserved early lead.

The goal only fueled the hosts’ momentum. Balogun thought he had doubled the advantage moments later, but his effort was ruled out for offside. The setback proved only temporary. Soon after, Christian Pulisic burst down the left flank and delivered a perfectly weighted pass across goal, allowing Balogun to calmly finish and make it 2-0.

The United States continued to dominate possession and create chances, with Malik Tillman orchestrating much of the attacking play. Tillman was arguably the standout performer on the field, repeatedly finding pockets of space and unlocking Paraguay’s defense with his vision and creativity.

As first-half stoppage time approached, Tillman once again supplied the decisive pass. Spotting Balogun’s run, he threaded a ball into the penalty area. The striker still had plenty of work to do, weaving between two defenders before shifting onto his favored left foot and curling an unstoppable shot into the top corner beyond goalkeeper Orlando Gill.

The spectacular finish sent the crowd into celebration and gave the United States a commanding 3-0 lead at halftime.

For Balogun, the goals represented another significant chapter in a unique international journey. Born in Brooklyn to Nigerian parents before moving to London as an infant, he developed through Arsenal’s academy and represented England at youth level before ultimately committing to the United States. Against Paraguay, he further cemented his status as America’s long-sought answer at center forward.

Paraguay showed greater determination after the break and managed to pull a goal back in the 73rd minute. Brazil-born midfielder Mauricio found space on the left side of the box and fired a precise finish past the American goalkeeper to reduce the deficit to 3-1.

Any hopes of a dramatic comeback, however, were quickly extinguished by a disciplined U.S. defense and continued control of the match.

Deep into injury time, substitute Giovanni Reyna provided one final moment of brilliance. Receiving the ball outside the area, Reyna unleashed a sublime effort with the outside of his right foot, bending the shot beyond Gill and into the far corner to complete the scoring.

The stunning strike capped a memorable evening for the tournament hosts, who opened their World Cup campaign with one of their most complete performances in recent memory.

Pochettino’s team showcased the depth, talent, and attacking quality that many believe could make them one of the tournament’s surprise contenders. With Balogun finding his scoring touch, Tillman pulling the strings in midfield, and stars such as Pulisic and Reyna contributing key moments, the United States could hardly have imagined a better start.

The 4-1 victory places the Americans atop Group D and sends an unmistakable message to the rest of the tournament: the hosts intend to be a serious force at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
