Donald Trump and Air Force One: A History of Controversy and Prestige

Air Force One has long been a symbol of American presidential power, but during Donald Trump’s presidency, the aircraft became a point of contention, especially regarding its redesign and cost.

The Controversial Redesign

One of Trump’s most notable moves regarding Air Force One was his push for a complete redesign of the aircraft’s color scheme. The traditional blue and white design, established under John F. Kennedy, was set to be replaced by a more patriotic red, white, and dark blue scheme. Trump claimed that the new colors would make the plane “more American,” though critics argued that it bore a resemblance to his personal aircraft.

The redesign was part of a broader contract with Boeing to replace the aging fleet of presidential aircraft. Trump boasted that he had negotiated a better deal, reducing costs from over $5 billion to $3.9 billion. However, Boeing later reported significant losses on the contract, citing higher costs than expected.

Air Force One and Trump’s Travel

During his presidency, Trump frequently used Air Force One for campaign-style rallies, often turning official presidential trips into political events. His use of the aircraft in this way led to criticism that taxpayer dollars were funding campaign efforts.

Trump’s post-presidency and reelection connection to Air Force One remained strong. He has often referenced his influence over the plane’s redesign and has even suggested that, should he win the 2024 election, he might revive his original vision for the aircraft.

The Future of Air Force One

The new Air Force One planes, initially expected in 2024, have faced delays due to production issues and cost overruns. President Joe Biden ultimately decided to abandon Trump’s proposed redesign, opting for a modified version of the classic blue-and-white scheme.

Trump, however, has hinted that if he returns to office, he may once again push for his preferred color scheme, making Air Force One a potential political flashpoint once more.
