Florida Holds Off Auburn 44-39 in Wild SEC Opener

Florida Delivered It’s Biggest Win of the Young Season

Florida improved to 3-0 for the first time since 2019 behind a dominant performance from running back Jadan Baugh, who rushed for 162 yards and three touchdowns. The Gators balanced offensive attack proved too much for Auburn to overcome, as Florida totaled 245 yards on the ground and 252 through the air.

Quarterback Aaron Philo added 202 passing yards and a touchdown, helping Florida consistently move the ball against an Auburn defense that struggled to contain the Gators’ rushing attack.

Baugh Powers Florida’s Ground Game

Baugh was the centerpiece of Florida’s offense, repeatedly finding running room and finishing drives with three rushing touchdowns. His 162-yard performance helped the Gators control the game on the ground while keeping Auburn’s defense from focusing exclusively on Philo. Florida also received significant contributions from its receiving corps. Vernell Brown III caught five passes for 86 yards, while Dallas Wilson added four receptions for 74 yards and a touchdown.

The Gators also pulled out a crucial trick play when seventh-year receiver Kahleil Jackson connected with Amir Jackson on a 48-yard pass. The unexpected play helped swing momentum Florida’s way and proved pivotal in a game that remained competitive into the final minutes. The combination of Baugh’s running, Philo’s passing and several explosive plays allowed Florida to produce a balanced attack throughout the night.

Auburn Rallies Late

Auburn’s offense struggled to find consistency early, continuing a trend that coach Alex Golesh lamented for the second straight week. The Tigers finished with 373 total yards, but only 102 came on the ground.

Quarterback Byrum Brown was forced to carry much of the offensive responsibility through the air. He completed 20 of 35 passes for 271 yards, three touchdowns and one interception while adding 65 rushing yards and a touchdown.

Brown kept Auburn within striking distance late, including a dramatic 35-yard Hail Mary touchdown pass to Chaz Nimrod with just 24 seconds remaining. The late touchdown gave the Tigers a final opportunity, but Florida held on to secure the five-point victory and open SEC play with an important road win.

Signature SEC Victory for Florida

The victory provided first-year Florida coach Billy Napier with an early signature moment as the Gators opened SEC play 3-0. Florida’s ability to produce offensively in multiple ways was particularly important against an Auburn team that continued to battle slow starts.

For Auburn, the loss dropped the Tigers to 2-1 and leaves them searching for more consistency as conference play continues. Florida now turns its attention to another major SEC challenge.The Gators will host No. 8 Ole Miss next Saturday in Gainesville, while Auburn will return home to face Vanderbilt.
