Florida’s Back to School Sales Tax Holiday Starts Today, Giving Families a Month to Save

Florida Tax Holiday 2026

Florida families can begin back-to-school shopping today without paying state sales tax on many essential items, as the state’s annual Back-to-School Sales Tax Holiday officially gets underway. The tax break, which runs from July 20 through Aug. 20, is designed to help parents, students, and teachers save money as they prepare for the new school year.

The month-long tax holiday comes at a time when many households continue to face higher prices on everyday goods. School shopping can quickly become one of the largest seasonal expenses for families, especially when clothing, supplies, backpacks, and technology are all needed before classes begin. By temporarily eliminating sales tax on qualifying purchases, Florida is offering consumers an opportunity to reduce those costs.

What Shoppers Can Buy Tax Free

The sales tax exemption applies to a wide variety of school related purchases, provided each item falls within the state’s price limits.

Clothing, shoes, wallets, handbags, backpacks, lunch boxes, and other qualifying apparel items priced at $100 or less per item are exempt from sales tax. School supplies such as notebooks, folders, pencils, pens, binders, crayons, calculators, glue, and similar classroom necessities qualify if they cost $50 or less per item.

The exemption also includes learning aids and jigsaw puzzles priced at $30 or less, recognizing that educational tools extend beyond the traditional classroom.

Perhaps the biggest savings are available on technology. Personal computers and many computer accessories costing $1,500 or less qualify for the tax exemption when purchased for personal use, allowing families to save significantly on laptops and other devices that have become increasingly important for education.

How the Price Limits Work

The state’s price thresholds apply to each individual item, not the total amount spent during a shopping trip.

For example, a backpack priced at exactly $100 qualifies for the exemption, while one priced at $101 does not. The same rule applies across all eligible categories, including computers, clothing, and school supplies.

Consumers should also remember that not every item sold in these departments automatically qualifies. Some specialty products and commercial-use electronics remain subject to sales tax.

Teachers Can Benefit Too

The tax holiday is not just for parents. Many Florida teachers purchase classroom supplies with their own money each year, and the exemption allows educators to save on eligible materials before students return to school.

From classroom decorations to basic instructional supplies, the tax holiday can help stretch educators’ budgets as they prepare for another academic year.

Online Purchases Are Included

Shoppers are not limited to visiting brick-and-mortar stores. Eligible items purchased online during the tax holiday period also qualify for the sales tax exemption, provided the order meets Florida’s requirements and the purchase is made during the designated dates.

This gives consumers additional flexibility to compare prices, shop multiple retailers, and avoid crowded stores while still receiving the tax savings.

A Longer Shopping Window

Unlike earlier years when Florida’s back-to-school tax holiday lasted only a few days or weekends, the current holiday spans an entire month. The extended timeline allows families to spread out purchases over several pay periods, monitor sales, and avoid last-minute shopping before the school year begins.

Retailers across Florida are expected to see increased traffic throughout the tax holiday as many stores combine the state tax exemption with their own promotions and discounts.

Preparing for the New School Year

With classes approaching across much of Florida in August, the sales tax holiday offers families an opportunity to purchase many of the essentials students need while keeping more money in their budgets. Whether shopping for a child’s first day of kindergarten or preparing a college student with a new laptop, the month-long exemption is intended to ease some of the financial pressure that comes with a new school year.

For shoppers, the biggest advantage may simply be time. Rather than rushing to complete purchases over a single weekend, Floridians have until Aug. 20 to take advantage of the state’s tax-free savings on qualifying back-to-school items.
