Hurricanes Complete Sweep, Advance to Eastern Conference Finals with Overtime Thriller

The Carolina Hurricanes are headed back to the Eastern Conference finals after another dramatic postseason victory, defeating the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2 in overtime in Game 4 to complete a commanding second-round sweep.

Jackson Blake delivered the series-clinching moment 5:28 into overtime, scoring his second goal of the night to send Carolina to its third Eastern Conference finals appearance in the last four years. Blake’s shot from the slot slipped off the glove of Flyers goaltender Dan Vladar and trickled across the goal line, capping another relentless performance from a Hurricanes team that has yet to lose in the playoffs.

The overtime winner was set up by veteran forwards Taylor Hall and defenseman Jaccob Slavin, continuing Carolina’s balanced offensive attack throughout the postseason.

Carolina’s perfect playoff run now stands at 8-0, marking the NHL’s first 8-0 postseason start since 1985. The Hurricanes also became just the 24th team in league history to win eight consecutive playoff games in a single postseason run — a notable omen considering 18 of those teams eventually captured the Stanley Cup.

Goaltender Frederik Andersen remained unbeaten this postseason, stopping 15 shots in another steady performance. Andersen has started every playoff game for Carolina and continues to provide the backbone for a team chasing its first Stanley Cup championship since 2006.

The Flyers fought hard to extend their season and nearly forced a Game 5 behind strong efforts from Alex Bump and Tyson Foerster, who each scored regulation goals. Vladar was outstanding despite the loss, turning aside 37 shots while facing relentless pressure from Carolina’s aggressive offense.

Philadelphia struck first when Foerster found the back of the net early, but Blake answered late in the second period with a fortunate bounce. His wrist shot from along the boards deflected off Flyers defenseman Jamie Drysdale and slipped past Vladar to tie the game 1-1.

Just moments later, it appeared Carolina had taken the lead when Mark Jankowski scored, but Flyers head coach Rick Tocchet successfully challenged the play for goaltender interference. Officials ruled that Carolina forward William Carrier interfered with Vladar, wiping the goal off the board.

The Flyers nearly grabbed momentum before the second intermission when Christian Dvorak rang a wrist shot off the post in the closing seconds.

Carolina finally broke through early in the third period. Logan Stankoven scored his seventh goal of the playoffs at the 4:13 mark, blasting home a one-timer off a beautiful cross-ice feed from Hall to give the Hurricanes a 2-1 lead.

Philadelphia answered quickly. Just 1:39 later, Bump tied the game 2-2 after taking a slick setup pass from Travis Konecny behind the net and firing a shot past Andersen’s glove side from the slot.

Despite the Flyers’ push, Carolina dominated much of the night territorially, outshooting Philadelphia 36-15 through regulation before Blake delivered the decisive strike in overtime.

The loss also highlighted a difficult postseason for young Flyers winger Matvei Michkov. The 23-year-old Russian star, selected seventh overall in the 2023 NHL Draft, was a healthy scratch for Game 4 after struggling throughout his first playoff appearance. Michkov finished the postseason with just one point and a minus-3 rating in eight games. It marked the second time this postseason that Philadelphia chose to sit one of the franchise’s cornerstone rebuilding pieces.

Now, the Hurricanes await the winner of the second-round showdown between the Buffalo Sabres and the Montreal Canadiens in the Eastern Conference finals.

With a flawless playoff record, elite defensive structure, and timely scoring throughout the lineup, Carolina looks increasingly like a legitimate Stanley Cup favorite as its championship pursuit rolls on.
