A 57-year-old man was killed Monday evening after the bag he was carrying became caught in the doors of a New York City subway train, causing him to be dragged as the train left a Brooklyn station.

The incident happened around 6 p.m. at the Utica Avenue station in Brooklyn. Police identified the victim as Yaw Boahene, a Brooklyn resident.

Bag Became Trapped In Train Doors

According to investigators, Boahene was exiting a northbound A train when his shopping bag became caught in the closing doors. As the train began moving, he was pulled along with it and onto the tracks.

Emergency responders found Boahene unconscious and unresponsive at the station. He was pronounced dead at the scene. Authorities initially described the item as a backpack before later clarifying that it was a shopping bag. Police have not indicated that anyone intentionally pulled Boahene or that another person was involved.

Investigation Underway

The circumstances surrounding the incident remain under investigation. Police have said there was no indication of criminality. Investigators are examining what happened before the train departed and how the bag became trapped in the doors.

The incident has also raised questions about subway safety procedures, including how trains are cleared of passengers and objects before departure. Authorities have not announced whether any equipment malfunctioned or whether operating procedures contributed to the death.

The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner is expected to determine the official cause of death. The investigation remains ongoing.
