NYC’s Plaza Hotel Faces Years Long Closure for Major Renovation

Plaza Hotel Closing For Years Long Renovation

New York City’s iconic Plaza Hotel is preparing to close for a major renovation that could keep the luxury property shut down for four years or longer. Located on Fifth Avenue beside Central Park, the hotel is known for its historic architecture, elegant interiors and reputation as one of Manhattan’s most famous luxury destinations. The closure is expected to begin in January 2027, with restoration work planned for the building’s exterior. The hotel’s final day of service is expected to be Jan. 19, with work scheduled to begin the following day.

What Will The Renovation Include?

The renovation will focus on repairing and restoring the hotel’s historic exterior, known as its façade. Because the building is a designated New York City landmark, the project requires extensive planning and coordination to preserve its architectural character. The extended closure is expected to affect the hotel’s 282 guest rooms, restaurants and event spaces. The Palm Court, which is known for its afternoon tea service, will also be affected by the shutdown.

What Happens To Hotel Employees And Residents?

The closure is expected to affect hundreds of hotel workers. The Hotel and Gaming Trades Council, which represents 378 union members at the property, has said workers will have the right to return to their jobs at the same pay when the hotel reopens. The union also plans to help employees find temporary work during the renovation. The building also contains 181 condominium units in addition to its hotel rooms. Details about how the renovation could affect condominium owners and residents have not been fully clarified.

The Plaza Hotel’s History

The Plaza opened in 1907 and has become one of New York City’s most recognizable landmarks. Its location overlooking Central Park and its reputation for luxury have attracted visitors, celebrities and international travelers for generations. The hotel has also appeared in several popular films, including Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, helping establish its place in popular culture. Its distinctive design and historic interiors have made it a familiar part of the city’s identity. The property previously underwent a major renovation between 2005 and 2008. That project reportedly cost $450 million and included the addition of luxury condominiums.

When Will The Plaza Reopen?

The upcoming renovation marks another significant chapter in the Plaza’s history. While the work is intended to preserve the landmark building, the extended closure will temporarily remove one of Manhattan’s best-known hospitality destinations from operation. A confirmed reopening date has not been announced. If the renovation takes at least four years, the hotel could remain closed until approximately 2031, depending on the project’s progress.
