A hobby that began more than two decades ago has turned into a massive miniature version of New York City that is now drawing visitors at a major museum. Joe Macken, a New York City native and truck driver, has spent the past 20 years building an enormous scale model of the city during his free time. What started as a personal project eventually grew into a sprawling recreation of New York made from materials including balsa wood and foam board. The detailed model has now moved from Macken’s home and onto the museum floor, where visitors can see his work up close.

A 20 Year Labor Of Love

Macken began constructing his model in 2004. He started with individual buildings before gradually expanding the project into a much larger representation of New York City. Over the years, Macken continued adding buildings, streets and landmarks whenever he had time. The project became a way for him to recreate the city he knew and loved while paying attention to architectural details that are easy to overlook when seeing New York at full scale. Rather than building the entire model at once, Macken worked on it piece by piece. Every new structure became another part of the enormous miniature city.

The Model Finds A New Audience On TikTok

For years, Macken’s creation was primarily a personal project. That changed when videos of the model began appearing on TikTok. The enormous size and incredible level of detail quickly caught people’s attention. Viewers were able to see tiny versions of familiar New York landmarks and neighborhoods while getting a look at the amount of work that went into creating them. The videos spread widely across social media, turning Macken into an unexpected internet sensation. The attention eventually brought the project to the Museum of the City of New York, where the model is now being displayed as an exhibition.

The model represents all five boroughs and includes a wide range of recognizable buildings and landmarks. Visitors can examine the miniature skyline and look for familiar parts of the city. The display is large enough that the museum provides binoculars to help visitors see some of the smaller details. Macken also incorporated different versions of New York into the model, allowing visitors to see reminders of the city’s past alongside its present day landscape. The result is more than a collection of miniature buildings. It is Macken’s personal interpretation of the city, shaped by the places he remembers and the countless hours he has spent studying New York’s architecture.

Macken never initially set out to create something that would eventually be displayed in a museum. For years, he simply kept building because he enjoyed the process. Now, something that began as a truck driver’s personal hobby has become a public exhibition that allows thousands of people to experience New York from an entirely different perspective. The Museum of the City of New York’s exhibition, “He Built This City: Joe Macken’s Model,” is scheduled to remain on display through October 12, 2026. For Macken, the journey from building tiny structures in his spare time to seeing the entire project displayed in a New York museum marks an extraordinary transformation for a hobby that began more than 20 years ago.
