The Miami Marlins put together an offensive explosion Sunday, cruising past the Los Angeles Angels 12-3 behind two home runs from Griffin Conine and a strong multiple hit performance from Javier Sanoja.
Miami scored six runs in the fifth inning to turn a close game into a rout, while Kyle Stowers contributed a triple, a single and two RBIs before leaving the game with left hamstring discomfort.
Stowers grimaced while rounding first base after his two run single capped Miami’s six-run fifth. He was immediately replaced by pinch runner Leo Jimenez. Marlins manager Clayton McCullough said Stowers will undergo further examination.
Despite losing one of their key offensive contributors, the Marlins continued to pour on the runs.
Sanoja finished with two singles and three RBIs, including a two run single during Miami’s big fifth inning. Conine followed with a two run drive off Angels reliever Shaun Anderson, and Stowers’ RBI single completed the six-run outburst.
Conine struck again in the eighth inning, launching a home run over the right-field wall against position player Tyler Heineman to give Miami its second multi-homer performance of the game.
Otto López also continued his productive season at the plate, collecting two infield singles. The performance gave López 46 multihit games this season.
The Marlins overcame an early deficit after the Angels scored first. Zach Neto delivered a run-scoring double in the first inning to put Los Angeles ahead 1-0.
Miami responded immediately with three runs in the bottom half.
Stowers tripled and scored on a wild pitch, and an errant throw by Angels first baseman Nolan Schanuel while attempting to get Xavier Edwards at third allowed another Miami run to score. Owen Caissie then capped the inning with an RBI single, putting the Marlins ahead 3-1.
Los Angeles trimmed the deficit in the third when José Siri launched a solo home run off Miami starter Ryan Gusto. Siri’s blast, his seventh of the season, sailed over the wall in center field and made it 3-2.
Miami answered again in the fourth when Sanoja delivered an RBI single to extend the lead to 4-2.
The Marlins then broke the game open in the fifth.
Sanoja’s two run single and Conine’s two run homer highlighted the six run inning, with Stowers adding his two run single before exiting with the hamstring issue.
Michael Petersen earned the victory, improving to 2-2 after throwing a scoreless fifth inning.
Gusto was pulled after four innings and 60 pitches. He allowed two runs on three hits while striking out four.
Angels starter Grayson Rodriguez (3-5) also lasted four innings. The right-hander surrendered four runs on four hits, walked four and struck out eight.
The victory gives Miami another strong offensive performance as the club continues its season.
The Angels will begin a four game home series against the Texas Rangers on Monday. Left hander Reid Detmers (3-8, 4.12 ERA) is scheduled to start for Los Angeles, while Texas has not yet announced its starter.
The Marlins will return home for a three game series against the Pittsburgh Pirates beginning Tuesday. Miami is scheduled to send right hander Eury Pérez (5-9, 3.61 ERA) to the mound, while Pittsburgh will counter with right hander Paul Skenes (9-10, 3.96).
Miami’s 12-3 victory was highlighted by an offensive surge, two home runs from Conine, three RBIs from Sanoja and a valuable contribution from Stowers before his early exit. The biggest concern for the Marlins now will be the results of Stowers’ examination and the severity of his hamstring discomfort.
