Cristiano Ronaldo silenced the doubters in emphatic fashion on Tuesday night, scoring twice and becoming the first player to find the net in six different FIFA World Cups as Portugal overwhelmed Uzbekistan 5-0 in a dominant Group K performance at Houston Stadium.
After facing criticism following a disappointing 1-1 draw with DR Congo in their tournament opener, Roberto Martínez’s side responded with authority, producing a dazzling attacking display that reignited their World Cup hopes. Alongside Ronaldo’s brace, goals from Nuno Mendes and Rafael Leão, plus an unfortunate Uzbekistan own goal, completed a one-sided victory.
Much of the pre-match discussion centered on Ronaldo’s place in Portugal’s lineup. The 41-year-old captain had yet to score in the tournament while fellow global stars Lionel Messi, Kylian Mbappé, Harry Kane, and Erling Haaland had already made headlines. Martínez, however, kept faith in his veteran forward and was richly rewarded.
Ronaldo needed only six minutes to make history.
Having missed an earlier opportunity when he failed to connect with a dangerous cross from Mendes, the Portuguese icon made no mistake moments later. João Cancelo delivered a precise pass into the penalty area, and Ronaldo expertly swiveled before firing a first-time shot inside the near post to give Portugal an early lead.
The goal etched another remarkable chapter into Ronaldo’s legendary career, making him the first player ever to score in six separate World Cup tournaments.
Portugal continued to pile on the pressure. Bruno Fernandes forced a deflection that carried his effort over the crossbar before Mendes doubled the advantage in the 17th minute with a cleverly executed free-kick. As Uzbekistan anticipated a Ronaldo strike from the edge of the box, the veteran forward stepped aside at the last moment, allowing Mendes to thunder a low effort beyond goalkeeper Abduvohid Nematov.
Uzbekistan, coached by 2006 World Cup-winning captain Fabio Cannavaro, briefly thought they had found a way back into the match. Azizjon Ganiev unleashed a stunning effort shortly before the half-hour mark, but celebrations were cut short after VAR ruled out the goal for a foul by Abbosbek Fayzullaev on Cancelo during the buildup.
The decision proved costly. Just minutes later, Portugal struck again. Fernandes threaded a perfectly weighted pass behind the defense, and Ronaldo raced through before calmly finishing past Nematov to make it 3-0 and effectively end the contest before halftime.
The Portuguese superstar nearly completed his hat-trick moments before the interval. He beat Nematov to a loose ball and attempted a delicate chip, only to see the effort cleared off the goal line.
Uzbekistan showed brief signs of resistance after the restart. Fayzullaev tested Diogo Costa with a low effort, but Portugal quickly regained control. Ronaldo continued his pursuit of a third goal but was denied by an excellent save from Nematov.
Portugal’s fourth goal arrived on the hour mark in bizarre fashion. A dangerous low cross into the penalty area ricocheted through a crowd of players before deflecting off defender Abdukodir Khusanov and then Nematov into the net for an own goal.
Ronaldo remained at the center of the action, forcing another impressive stop from Nematov as he searched for a memorable hat-trick. Although the landmark third goal never arrived, Portugal’s attacking display was capped in style by substitute Rafael Leão.
A defensive clearance fell kindly into the AC Milan forward’s path, and Leão made no mistake, blasting a powerful finish into the roof of the net to complete the 5-0 rout.
The comprehensive victory moves Portugal firmly back into contention in Group K and restores confidence after their underwhelming opening match. For Ronaldo, meanwhile, it was another night of history and a reminder that even at 41 years old, he remains one of football’s biggest stars on the sport’s grandest stage.
With momentum now on their side, Portugal will look to build on this commanding performance as they continue their pursuit of a place in the World Cup knockout rounds.
