Explosion in Downtown Manhattan
A suspect is in custody after a makeshift incendiary device ignited outside one of New York City’s busiest federal office buildings Monday morning, prompting a large emergency response in Lower Manhattan and raising new concerns about security at a major federal complex.
The incident occurred outside 26 Federal Plaza, a 41-story government building that houses numerous federal agencies, including offices operated by the Federal Bureau of Investigation, Department of Homeland Security, U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services, Immigration and Customs Enforcement, and several federal courts and prosecutors.
Authorities said the device emitted smoke and flames shortly before 7:30 a.m., leading police officers, firefighters, bomb squad personnel, and federal agents to quickly secure the area.
Authorities Quickly Detain Suspect
The FBI confirmed that one suspect was taken into custody following the incident.
According to investigators, the individual allegedly ignited a homemade incendiary device outside the building before being apprehended by law enforcement. Officials have not yet publicly identified the suspect or announced any formal charges.
The FBI’s New York Field Office said there is no ongoing threat to the public and emphasized that investigators believe the situation has been contained.
Officials are continuing to examine the device and determine whether the suspect acted alone or if there were any additional threats.
No Injuries Reported
Fortunately, no injuries were reported despite the fire and smoke generated by the device.
Emergency crews quickly extinguished the flames before they could spread or damage the federal building.
Video from the scene showed firefighters working near the building’s entrance while bomb technicians and investigators examined the area. Portions of the sidewalk surrounding Federal Plaza were temporarily closed as authorities conducted their investigation.
Public transportation and pedestrian traffic experienced minor disruptions while police established a security perimeter.
What Is an Incendiary Device?
Unlike an explosive device designed to create a blast wave, an incendiary device is intended primarily to start fires using combustible materials.
Investigators have described Monday’s device as “makeshift,” meaning it was homemade rather than commercially manufactured.
Authorities have not released details about its exact construction or whether it contained any explosive components.
Federal bomb technicians continue to analyze the device as part of the criminal investigation.
