Trump Calls for Impeachment and Prosecution of Kamala Harris Over Border Issues During Rally in Erie, PA
Former President Donald Trump ramped up his rhetoric against Vice President Kamala Harris during a rally in Erie, Pennsylvania, on Sunday, calling for her impeachment and prosecution over her handling of the U.S. southern border. Trump accused Harris of actions that led to the deaths of Americans and claimed that her policies would result in further tragedies.
“People were murdered because of her action at the border, and thousands more will follow in rapid succession,” Trump said, adding that “she should be impeached and prosecuted for her actions.”
This rally marked a continuation of Trump’s personal attacks on Harris, which have escalated as the 2024 presidential campaign intensifies. On Saturday, during a rally in Wisconsin, Trump referred to Harris as “mentally disabled” and “mentally impaired,” doubling down on those claims the following day. His supporters responded with chants of “lock her up” after he called Harris a “stupid person.”
Trump’s repeated attacks on Harris have frequently focused on her race and gender, fueling further controversy. He has also threatened legal actions against several of his political opponents, including jailing Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg and prosecuting election officials and donors if he is re-elected.
In contrast, Harris has consistently pointed to Trump’s role in blocking a bipartisan border security deal in Congress during February of his presidency. In a recent visit to the U.S.-Mexico border, Harris vowed to bring the bill back to Congress and sign it into law if she is elected president.
Trump’s strategy to criticize Harris over border security appears to resonate with a significant portion of the electorate. A recent NBC News poll found that 54% of registered voters believed Trump would handle border security better than Harris, with 33% supporting Harris on the issue.
Harris’ campaign did not immediately respond to Trump’s latest comments, but her spokesperson previously condemned Trump’s remarks at his Saturday rally, stating that he has “nothing ‘inspiring’ to offer the American people, just darkness.”
Some Republicans have expressed discomfort with Trump’s language. House Majority Whip Tom Emmer urged a focus on the issues rather than personal attacks, while Senator Lindsey Graham noted that it would be better to critique Harris’ policies rather than her mental fitness.
Former Maryland Governor Larry Hogan, a Republican running for the Senate, also criticized Trump’s comments, calling them “insulting” to both Harris and individuals with mental disabilities. Hogan, distancing himself from both Trump and Harris, said neither candidate had “earned my vote.”
Trump’s remarks in Erie come as both parties gear up for what is expected to be a tightly contested 2024 election. His harsh rhetoric against Harris signals his ongoing focus on immigration as a key issue for his campaign.
