AG Bondi Under Senate Investigation for Targeting Trump’s Enemies

Senate Democrats Demand Answers on DOJ Politicization After Comey Indictment

Washington, D.C. — Senate Judiciary Committee Democrats, led by Senator Dick Durbin (D-IL), are demanding answers from Attorney General Pam Bondi after a series of high-profile personnel moves and indictments that lawmakers say reveal a dangerous politicization of the Justice Department under President Donald Trump.

Comey Indicted, U.S. Attorney Forced Out

The controversy escalated after the indictment of former FBI Director James Comey by newly installed Acting U.S. Attorney Lindsey Halligan, a Trump loyalist who had never prosecuted a case before her appointment. Comey’s indictment followed the forced resignation of Erik Seibert, Acting U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia, who reportedly refused repeated White House and DOJ demands to pursue criminal charges against New York Attorney General Letitia James and Comey. According to Durbin and eight Judiciary Committee Democrats, Seibert’s removal and Halligan’s rapid installation, just three days before Comey’s indictment, are part of a broader pattern of weaponizing DOJ to punish political opponents.

Senators Cite Pressure Campaign

In their letter to AG Bondi, the lawmakers allege that President Trump and senior DOJ officials, including Ed Martin, head of the DOJ Weaponization Working Group, pressured prosecutors for months to bring charges against perceived adversaries. When Seibert refused, Trump moved quickly to replace him. The senators emphasized that a months-long DOJ investigation produced no evidence of criminal wrongdoing by AG James. Despite this, Trump declared James “guilty as hell” in a social media post and pressured Bondi to bring charges anyway.

“Our justice system operates on the principle that the President cannot demand the prosecution of an individual to settle personal scores, let alone when there is no credible evidence that a person engaged in any wrongdoing,” the lawmakers wrote.

Warnings of Political Retaliation

The letter accuses DOJ of wasting resources to settle Trump’s “petty grievances” while shielding corruption by his allies. The senators warned that such politicization represents a “grave miscarriage of justice” and a direct violation of Bondi’s oath of office.

“While DOJ wastes resources chasing President Trump’s petty grievances, it is gaining the dubious reputation of pursuing cases with insufficient evidence and covering up reported corruption and criminal wrongdoing by the President’s supporters,” the letter stated.

Senate Democrats’ Demands

Durbin and his colleagues are demanding that Bondi provide documents related to the DOJ Weaponization Working Group’s communications with the White House, as well as internal records concerning personnel decisions in multiple U.S. Attorney’s offices. They are also requesting that several officials, including Acting U.S. Attorney Lindsey Halligan, U.S. Attorney for D.C. Jeanine Pirro, DOJ official Ed Martin, and senior adviser Jared Wise, be made available for testimony before the Judiciary Committee.

Joining Durbin in signing the letter were Senators Sheldon Whitehouse (D-RI), Amy Klobuchar (D-MN), Chris Coons (D-DE), Richard Blumenthal (D-CT), Mazie Hirono (D-HI), Cory Booker (D-NJ), Alex Padilla (D-CA), and Peter Welch (D-VT).

The Bigger Picture

The Comey indictment marks one of the most dramatic examples of Trump’s post-reelection campaign to reshape the Justice Department into an apparatus for personal and political retribution. For Senate Democrats, the line has now been crossed: DOJ, they argue, has been bent into a partisan weapon, one that threatens the very rule of law.
