Cassandra Tresl and her husband relocated to the Abruzzo region of central Italy after deciding that life in New York had become financially unsustainable. The couple purchased a house in cash for approximately €11,000, or about $13,100, before investing another €14,500, roughly $17,100, to renovate the property. Their total investment came to just over $30,000, significantly less than the down payment required for many homes in the United States.

A Fresh Start in Italy

The family’s new home is located in a small hill town in Italy’s Abruzzo region, an area known for its medieval villages, mountain landscapes, and lower cost of living compared to larger Italian cities. Like many rural communities across Italy, the town has experienced decades of population decline as younger generations moved to urban centers.

Rather than participating in one of Italy’s widely publicized €1 home programs, the family purchased a property at market price that still required substantial renovations. Even with those renovation costs, the total price remained remarkably low by American housing standards.

The renovation focused on modernizing essential living spaces while preserving much of the home’s traditional Italian character, allowing the family to create a permanent residence without taking on a mortgage.

Escaping High Housing Costs
