Chris Anne Affleck Dies At 83
Christopher Anne “Chris” Affleck, the mother of Academy Award-winning actors Ben Affleck and Casey Affleck, has died at the age of 83 after battling pancreatic cancer. According to her family, she passed away peacefully on June 2, just months after receiving her diagnosis in December 2025.
Although known to many as the mother of two Hollywood stars, Chris Affleck built a remarkable life defined by education, activism, and public service. A graduate of Harvard University, she spent more than three decades as a public school teacher in Massachusetts, inspiring generations of students before retiring in 2008.
A Lifetime Of Service
Born Christopher Anne Boldt in New York City on January 5, 1942, Affleck devoted much of her life to causes she believed in. During the Civil Rights Movement, she participated in the 1964 Freedom Summer literacy campaign in Mississippi, helping register Black voters and improve educational opportunities. She later became involved in anti-war demonstrations during the Vietnam War and remained active in political and environmental causes throughout her life.
Her advocacy continued well into retirement. She volunteered on Barack Obama’s presidential campaign, worked with organizations focused on environmental sustainability, and supported efforts promoting clean water and social justice. Family members described her as someone who believed deeply in education, compassion, and civic engagement, values she passed on to her children and grandchildren.
Cherishing Family Until The End
After being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in late 2025, doctors estimated Chris Affleck had about six months to live. According to her obituary, one of her final wishes was to attend the high school graduation of her grandson, Atticus.
She was able to celebrate that milestone with her family on May 31. Just two days later, on June 2, she died peacefully in her sleep surrounded by loved ones. Chris Affleck is survived by her sons, Ben and Casey Affleck, as well as her five grandchildren: Violet, Fin, Sam, Indiana, and Atticus.
Supporting Ben And Casey From The Beginning
Following her divorce from Timothy Affleck, Chris raised Ben and Casey in Massachusetts, encouraging both boys to pursue their creative interests while emphasizing the importance of education and hard work. Her support remained constant as their acting careers took off. In 1998, she joined Ben at the Academy Awards when he and longtime friend Matt Damon won the Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for Good Will Hunting. The emotional celebration, which included Ben embracing his mother after the historic win, became one of the night’s most memorable moments. Over the years, both Ben and Casey have spoken about the important role their mother played in shaping their lives and careers.
