The NFL is on the verge of witnessing one of the most significant defensive trades in league history as the Cleveland Browns and the Los Angeles Rams finalize a blockbuster deal that will send star pass rusher Myles Garrett to the Rams in exchange for rising defensive standout Jared Verse, a 2027 first-round draft pick, and additional draft compensation still being negotiated.
According to reports from NFL Network insiders Ian Rapoport and Tom Pelissero, along with ESPN’s Adam Schefter, the agreement is expected to be completed soon, bringing an end to months of speculation surrounding Garrett’s future in Cleveland and giving Los Angeles another marquee addition in its pursuit of a championship.
Los Angeles has never shied away from making bold, franchise-altering trades, and the acquisition of Garrett would rank alongside the organization’s blockbuster deal for quarterback Matthew Stafford before the 2021 season. That gamble paid off with a Super Bowl title on home turf, and with Super Bowl LXI scheduled to be played once again at SoFi Stadium, the Rams are clearly pushing their chips toward the center of the table.
Garrett, a seven-time Pro Bowler and two-time NFL Defensive Player of the Year, remains widely regarded as the league’s premier defensive player. The 30-year-old is coming off another dominant campaign in which he set the NFL’s single-season sack record and further cemented his place among the game’s all-time great pass rushers.
The Rams’ pursuit of Garrett began shortly after the Browns restructured his contract in March. By moving option bonuses from the early days of the league year to just before the regular season, Cleveland inadvertently made a future trade more manageable from a salary-cap standpoint.
Despite repeatedly insisting publicly and privately that Garrett was untouchable, the Browns continued hearing from Los Angeles. Sources indicated the Rams never abandoned their pursuit, becoming the only team willing to relentlessly test Cleveland’s resolve.
Trade discussions intensified following the 2026 NFL Draft. The Rams initially proposed packages centered on draft picks, but Cleveland refused to engage without including Verse, the 25-year-old edge rusher who has emerged as one of the NFL’s brightest young defensive talents.
Verse, selected in the first round of the 2024 draft, has recorded 12 sacks and 22 tackles for loss over his first two professional seasons. Los Angeles was initially reluctant to part with the ascending defender, but negotiations evolved as both sides worked to balance the inclusion of Verse with the accompanying draft compensation.
For Cleveland, the trade represents a major organizational pivot.
While losing a generational talent such as Garrett is never easy, the Browns believe they are securing substantial long-term value. Verse provides a younger and more affordable cornerstone defender, while the additional draft capital strengthens Cleveland’s ability to reshape its roster over the coming years.
The Browns also project significant financial benefits from the move, reportedly saving approximately $30 million in cash while maintaining the flexibility to negotiate a lucrative extension with Verse when he becomes eligible.
The deal further bolsters Cleveland’s future draft resources. The Browns are expected to possess two first-round selections in 2027 and currently project to hold 11 total picks in that draft, giving them ample ammunition to move around the board or target specific prospects.
Championship windows do not stay open forever, and opportunities to acquire a player of Garrett’s caliber rarely arise. Under contract through the 2030 season, Garrett immediately becomes the centerpiece of a defense already loaded with talent and gives Los Angeles perhaps the most feared pass-rushing force in football.
As much of the NFL’s attention remained focused on other trade rumors around the league, the Browns and Rams quietly assembled a transaction that could reshape the balance of power in the NFC and AFC alike.
If finalized, Garrett’s move to Los Angeles will not only stand among the biggest trades of the modern NFL era—it could ultimately be remembered as the defining defensive blockbuster of the decade.
