Man Injured in Fireworks Accident in Florida City, Airlifted to Hospital
Florida City, FL – A man sustained severe injuries in a fireworks-related accident Monday evening near the 900 block of W. Lucy Street, authorities confirmed.
The incident, which occurred at the M&M Meat Market, left the man with a critical hand injury, according to Florida City Police. After the accident, the injured individual managed to return to his home in Homestead, where paramedics later responded. He was subsequently airlifted to Jackson South Trauma Center. Officials reported his condition as stable.
Disturbing footage from a neighbor’s security camera captured a U-Haul van driving through a Homestead neighborhood, with blood visibly streaked along its side and an object dangling out of the vehicle’s window.
The incident serves as a stark reminder of the inherent dangers of fireworks, particularly during holiday celebrations.
Fire Safety Officials Urge Caution
Miami-Dade Fire Rescue spokesperson Erika Benitez emphasized the importance of safety when handling fireworks.
“If you decide to celebrate at home, only purchase fireworks from approved vendors and always follow the manufacturer’s instructions,” Benitez said. She recommended designating one person to handle fireworks, lighting only one at a time, and ensuring the activity takes place on a paved surface, away from flammable materials.
Benitez also highlighted the dangers of attempting to re-light or handle fireworks that fail to ignite properly. “Always have a garden hose, bucket of water, or fire extinguisher nearby in case of an emergency,” she advised.
Holiday Fireworks Risks
The incident underscores the risks associated with home fireworks displays, which can lead to serious injuries or property damage if not managed responsibly. Authorities continue to urge residents to prioritize safety and consider attending professional fireworks shows instead of conducting their own displays.
Further details about the accident remain limited, and an investigation is ongoing.
