Florida Mother Accused of Having Sex With Adult Son ‘About 100 Times’ After Domestic Violence Call Exposes Alleged Relationship

A routine domestic violence investigation in Polk County took an extraordinary turn after authorities say a Lakeland man told deputies he had been having sex with his biological mother since he was 18, an allegation the woman allegedly confirmed to investigators.

LAKELAND, Fla. — What began as a domestic violence call involving a Florida mother and her adult son developed into an incest investigation after deputies learned of an alleged years long sexual relationship between the two, according to Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd.

The Polk County Sheriff’s Office publicly detailed the case during a morning briefing on Sept. 15. Sheriff Judd said 46 year old Christina Clemens had contacted authorities following a domestic dispute involving her son, Shane Clemens. She accused him of battering her, and deputies took Shane into custody.

The investigation then took a dramatic turn.

According to Judd, Shane told authorities following his arrest that he and his biological mother had been engaged in a sexual relationship since he was 18 years old. Investigators subsequently questioned Christina about the allegation. Her alleged response became the most startling detail of the case.

Judd said Christina acknowledged the relationship and told investigators it had happened “only about 100 times.”

Domestic Violence Investigation Uncovers Separate Allegations

According to the Sheriff’s Office, the alleged incestuous relationship was not the reason deputies initially became involved with the family. Authorities were responding to the reported domestic altercation between Christina and Shane. Shane’s disclosure following his arrest prompted investigators to open an entirely different line of inquiry.

Authorities allege the sexual relationship began after Shane reached adulthood and continued for several years. Current reporting based on the arrest affidavit says Shane did not grow up with Christina but later reconnected with her. Investigators allege the two continued having sexual encounters despite knowing they were biologically related.

Christina’s husband was also interviewed as detectives investigated the allegations. According to Judd, the husband told investigators he had not known his wife and her son were allegedly having sex. He did, however, recall behavior that had made him suspicious, including the pair entering the master bedroom together and locking the door.

“What else can you say?” Judd said while discussing the investigation. “That’s nasty. That’s nasty and it’s illegal.”

Florida Law Makes Incest a Felony

Florida law specifically prohibits sexual intercourse between people related by direct bloodline, including parents and children. Under Florida Statute 826.04, knowingly having sexual intercourse with someone related by lineal consanguinity constitutes incest, a third degree felony. The statute also applies to certain other close biological relationships.

Christina was arrested on an incest charge and also charged with living in open adultery, an unusual criminal charge that remains part of Florida law. Under Florida Statute 798.01, living in an open state of adultery is a second-degree misdemeanor when at least one of the people involved is married. Christina’s husband told investigators the couple remained married and living together, according to authorities.

Shane’s Incest Charge Reportedly Dropped

Initial statements from the Polk County Sheriff’s Office said both Christina and Shane were charged with incest, while Shane separately faced a domestic violence battery charge stemming from the original confrontation with his mother.

However, court records reviewed by Oxygen and reported on Sept. 17 now list Shane’s incest charge as dropped. The outlet also reported that jail records showed Shane had been released Thursday. Christina, meanwhile, continues to face the incest and living-in-open-adultery charges, according to the latest available reporting.

The reason Shane’s incest charge was dropped was not immediately clear from the publicly available reporting, and the dismissal does not by itself establish why prosecutors or the court declined to proceed with that particular charge.

An Unusual Case Even by Polk County Standards

Sheriff Judd has become nationally known for colorful press conferences detailing some of Polk County’s most unusual criminal investigations, but the allegations in this case stood out even among the cases regularly highlighted by the agency.

The investigation also illustrates how an apparently straightforward domestic violence call can expose allegations of entirely different criminal conduct. The underlying domestic violence investigation began in late August, according to reporting based on arrest records, before Judd publicly discussed the case during his Sept. 15 morning briefing.

For Christina, the allegations now involve not only the unusual adultery charge but a felony incest prosecution arising from what authorities allege was a years-long sexual relationship with her biological son.

The allegations remain accusations unless and until proven in court.
