Residents Are Pushing Back

In Lago Vista, Texas, residents pushed back against the city’s use of Flock cameras, raising concerns about privacy and license plate surveillance. The city ultimately voted not to renew its agreement with the company, turning the community into another example of the growing resistance to automated license plate readers.
The controversy demonstrates that the debate is no longer limited to privacy organizations or technology critics. Residents are increasingly asking their local governments to explain exactly what information is being collected, who can access it and how that information can be used.
Los Angeles Also Ended Its Flock Agreement
The concerns have also reached some of the country’s largest cities. Los Angeles allowed its police department’s contract with Flock to expire after officials raised concerns involving privacy and civil liberties.
The decision was significant because Los Angeles had been using a large network of Flock cameras. The move showed that concerns about the technology are not limited to small communities or residents who oppose surveillance in general. Instead, local officials are increasingly examining whether existing safeguards are strong enough to justify continuing the programs.
