Medical Emergency Forces Diversion
A regional passenger flight traveling from New Jersey to Canada was forced to divert to Boston after the aircraft’s captain suffered a serious medical emergency while in the air. The incident occurred on June 24 aboard Air Canada Flight 7664, operated by PAL Airlines, which had departed Newark Liberty International Airport and was bound for Halifax, Nova Scotia. Approximately an hour into the flight, the captain became incapacitated after experiencing what passengers described as a medical episode that appeared to be a seizure.
Co Pilot Takes Control
Following established aviation safety procedures, the captain was removed from the flight deck while the first officer assumed control of the aircraft. The co-pilot then diverted the flight to Boston Logan International Airport, where the plane landed safely shortly after 2 p.m. local time. The successful diversion underscored the extensive training commercial airline pilots receive to handle emergencies, including situations in which one member of the flight crew becomes unable to perform their duties.
Passengers Assist During In Flight Crisis
Several passengers described the situation as alarming, with some reporting unexpected aircraft movements during the captain’s medical episode. After the pilot was brought out of the cockpit, flight attendants and passengers worked together to assist him. According to passenger accounts, several travelers helped restrain the pilot to prevent him from injuring himself while the aircraft descended toward Boston.
Emergency Responders Meet Aircraft
Emergency personnel, including firefighters and medical teams, were waiting at the airport when the flight arrived. The pilot was immediately transported to a local hospital for evaluation and treatment. Authorities have not publicly released details regarding his condition, and no information has been provided about the cause of the medical emergency.
Flight Lands Safely
Air Canada confirmed that 61 passengers were aboard the aircraft at the time of the incident. Despite the frightening circumstances, the flight landed safely without injuries reported among passengers or crew. The airline subsequently worked to make travel arrangements for those whose journeys were disrupted by the unexpected diversion.
Safety Protocols Worked as Intended
While rare, pilot incapacitation is a scenario for which commercial airlines regularly train. Modern aviation procedures are designed to ensure that another qualified pilot can safely operate the aircraft if a medical emergency affects a member of the flight crew. In this case, those safeguards functioned as intended, allowing the aircraft to reach the ground safely and preventing what could have become a far more serious incident.
