SNL Weekend Update Torches Trump’s Ballroom, Kristi Noem’s Divorce and the GOP’s Midterm Meltdown

SNL’s ‘Weekend Update’ Torches Trump’s Ballroom, Kristi Noem, JD Vance and the GOP’s Midterm Problems

Saturday Night Live’s “Weekend Update” returned Saturday night with Colin Jost and Michael Che unloading on President Donald Trump, Kristi Noem, Vice President JD Vance, Pete Hegseth and the Republican Party as Washington barrels toward the 2026 midterm elections. The Oct. 3 broadcast, part of SNL’s second episode of Season 52, came during an episode hosted by Dakota Johnson with Turnstile as musical guest, but at the Weekend Update desk, Jost and Che largely abandoned Hollywood for Washington, turning a chaotic week of political headlines into a rapid-fire barrage of jokes about the Trump administration, immigration enforcement, Republican electoral problems and some of the stranger stories circulating around American politics.

Trump’s White House Ballroom Gets the Michael Che Treatment

One of the segment’s biggest targets was Trump’s planned White House ballroom, a project that has become an unusually rich source of material for late night television. Che zeroed in on reports about security features surrounding the ballroom and Trump’s claims involving armed drones, reducing the increasingly elaborate description to something resembling a child designing the ultimate backyard fortress and rattling off increasingly absurd imaginary additions. The joke worked because the underlying story already sounded almost engineered for SNL: a president famous for gold, real estate and oversized construction projects discussing a massive ballroom while simultaneously talking about sophisticated security measures. It was classic Weekend Update territory, take a real headline, push its internal absurdity another 20 percent and get out before anyone has time to recover.

Kristi Noem Divorce Joke Produces One of the Night’s Biggest Groans

Jost delivered one of the segment’s darkest punches while discussing former Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem and reports surrounding her divorce from Bryon Noem after more than three decades of marriage. Che first set up the story before Jost connected Noem’s personal separation to the Trump administration’s immigration policies, joking that while Noem was sad about the divorce, she was “always happy to separate another family” as an image of Noem wearing an ICE vest appeared on screen. The audience immediately reacted with a mixture of laughter, applause and audible groans — usually a reliable sign that Weekend Update has landed exactly where it intended. The punchline was more than a celebrity-divorce joke, directly tying Noem’s personal life to one of the most controversial elements of the Trump administration’s immigration crackdown: the human consequences of aggressive detention and deportation policies.

JD Vance’s ‘Uphill Climb’ Turns Into a January 6 Joke

Vice President JD Vance also took a hit after describing the Republican Party’s position in the approaching midterm elections as an “uphill climb,” giving Che an opening to joke that Republicans had managed an uphill climb before, a reference to the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol. It was a brutally efficient Weekend Update joke, connecting Republican anxiety about the 2026 elections to the defining political violence that followed Trump’s defeat in the 2020 presidential election. The gag also fit the larger political theme running through Saturday’s episode, with SNL’s cold open already portraying Republicans as increasingly nervous about November and featuring James Austin Johnson’s Trump, Marcello Hernández’s Marco Rubio and Jost’s Pete Hegseth in a fictional Republican voter-outreach effort.

Trump’s War With the Media Remains an Easy SNL Target

Jost and Che also went after Trump’s continued attacks on news organizations, including his antagonism toward CNN and other outlets. Trump’s relationship with the press has been a recurring subject for SNL for years, but the latest Weekend Update treated the escalating hostility less like a new development than another chapter in a political relationship that has become almost permanently adversarial. That dynamic remains tailor made for Jost and Che because Trump’s public statements frequently provide the setup themselves, allowing Weekend Update to concentrate on the punchline rather than spending valuable airtime explaining the premise. The result was another segment in which the boundary between political headline and comedy setup became remarkably thin.

Pete Hegseth Continues to Be One of SNL’s Favorite New Targets

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth also remained firmly inside SNL’s crosshairs, becoming an increasingly frequent target as his public comments about military culture, physical standards, masculinity and what he describes as ideological problems inside the armed forces continue generating headlines. Jost has turned Hegseth into a recurring caricature built around exaggerated macho posturing, and Saturday’s episode doubled down on the bit. The cold open featured Jost portraying Hegseth as a hyper masculine culture warrior obsessed with testosterone, muscles and purging the military of people he considers insufficiently tough, while Weekend Update returned to Hegseth-related material later in the broadcast, making the defense secretary one of the episode’s most thoroughly roasted political figures.

Ken Paxton Gets Dragged Into the Midterm Roast

Texas Republican Senate candidate Ken Paxton was another target as Che mocked reports about Paxton’s travel spending while tying the story to abortion access. The joke landed against a much larger political backdrop, with Texas becoming an important battlefield in the 2026 election cycle and Paxton’s campaign attracting national attention as Republicans fight to maintain control of Congress. SNL did not bother pretending the stakes were small, repeatedly returning throughout the episode to the same underlying premise: Republicans are facing a difficult political environment, Trump remains the gravitational center of the party, and virtually every strange headline surrounding the administration has become potential campaign material.

Stephen Miller Becomes the Chupacabra

Trump adviser Stephen Miller also found himself on the receiving end of the segment’s political fire as the show riffed on Republican efforts to appeal to Hispanic voters. Miller was compared to the Chupacabra, the legendary creature of Latin American folklore traditionally blamed for attacking livestock, delivering exactly the kind of visual insult Weekend Update specializes in: culturally recognizable, immediately understandable and savage enough that almost no additional setup was necessary. The joke also fit neatly alongside the episode’s broader mockery of Republican outreach to Latino voters, a theme that had already appeared during the cold open when Hernández’s Marco Rubio addressed voters in Spanish.

Weekend Update Wanders Into Cornell, Carefully…

The segment eventually moved beyond Washington and into one of the week’s more sensitive stories: renewed controversy surrounding sexual assault allegations connected to Cornell University. Che acknowledged the seriousness of the subject before moving into the comedy, signaling that the show understood the obvious danger of turning allegations of sexual violence themselves into a punchline. That distinction matters because Weekend Update has always operated close to the edge, but its most effective jokes generally target institutions, politicians, media coverage and absurd public reactions rather than victims. The segment also found room for considerably lighter material, including jokes about the return of “Glee,” providing some breathing room after a particularly politics-heavy opening stretch.

Jost and Che Are Already Treating the Midterms Like the Main Event

Two episodes into Season 52, SNL appears to have made its direction for the fall unmistakable: the 2026 midterms are coming, Trump remains president, Republicans are defending their grip on Washington, and Jost and Che have an almost endless supply of political material. Saturday’s Weekend Update was especially effective because much of the comedy did not require elaborate sketches or impressions. A Trump ballroom equipped with military-style security, a Republican vice president warning about an “uphill climb,” a bitterly polarizing immigration crackdown and another round of Republican attempts to broaden the party’s appeal already contained the ingredients. Jost and Che simply connected them, and when Weekend Update is working, that is usually all it needs to do.
