Switzerland Beats Canada 2-1 to Win Group B at 2026 FIFA World Cup

Switzerland secured first place in Group B and dashed co-host Canada’s hopes of remaining on home soil for the knockout rounds with a hard-fought 2-1 victory on Wednesday at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.

Led by the creativity and strength of striker Breel Embolo, the Swiss finished the group stage unbeaten and booked a return trip to Vancouver for the Round of 32. Canada, despite the defeat, advanced as the group runner-up thanks to its head-to-head advantage over Bosnia and Herzegovina and will now travel to Los Angeles for its knockout-stage match.

The opening half produced chances for both sides but no goals.

Switzerland nearly struck inside 11 minutes when Embolo broke behind defender Richie Laryea and fired on goal, only for Canadian goalkeeper Maxime Crépeau to make a crucial block. Johan Manzambi pounced on the rebound, but defender Derek Cornelius was on hand to clear the danger and keep the hosts level.

Canada responded shortly afterward through Cyle Larin, whose effort found the net but was ruled out by an offside flag. The veteran striker came much closer in the 33rd minute when Jonathan David slipped him through on goal, forcing Swiss goalkeeper Gregor Kobel into a strong save with a curling right-footed attempt.

Kobel remained busy as the Canadians pressed for an opener. He reacted sharply to deny Ali Ahmed at the near post after another clever setup from David, who also sent a dangerous left-footed effort wide before halftime.

After a scoreless first 45 minutes, the match burst into life almost immediately following the restart.

Just 40 seconds into the second half, Embolo showcased his quality by stealing possession from full-back Alistair Johnston on the right flank before delivering a cross to the far post. Rubén Vargas met it with a powerful finish that beat Crépeau at his near post and gave Switzerland a 1-0 lead.

The Swiss doubled their advantage in the 57th minute through Manzambi. Embolo again played a decisive role, holding up the ball and feeding the young midfielder on a driving run toward goal. Manzambi’s shot appeared manageable, but Crépeau could not keep it out as the ball slipped through his grasp and into the net for a 2-0 Swiss advantage.

Canada refused to surrender and pulled a goal back with 14 minutes remaining. Nathan Saliba delivered an excellent cross into the penalty area, and substitute Promise David powered home an emphatic finish beyond Kobel to ignite hopes of a late comeback.

The hosts pushed forward relentlessly in the closing stages. Their best opportunity arrived deep into stoppage time when Johnston rose to meet a cross inside the box, but his header was kept out by Kobel, preserving Switzerland’s lead and sealing all three points.

The victory confirmed Switzerland as Group B winners and maintained their unbeaten record heading into the knockout rounds. Embolo’s two assists highlighted another influential performance as Murat Yakin’s side strengthened its credentials as a dangerous contender in the tournament.

For Canada, the defeat ended hopes of a home knockout match in Vancouver, but Jesse Marsch’s squad still achieved a major milestone by advancing to the Round of 32. With Jonathan David, Larin, and Promise David providing attacking threats, the Canadians will now turn their attention to a challenging trip to Los Angeles as they seek to continue their World Cup journey.
