Massive Fire Engulfs Three Yachts in Miami-Dade Marina
Miami-Dade County, Fla. – A massive fire engulfed three luxury yachts early Friday morning in northwest Miami-Dade, prompting an extensive emergency response from Miami-Dade Fire Rescue (MDFR). The blaze, which broke out around 3:30 a.m., sent thick plumes of smoke into the air and caused an explosion that shattered windows in nearby buildings.
Incident Details
The fire occurred near the Miami Marine Center marina and Jones Boat Yard on Northwest North River Drive. Witnesses reported hearing a loud explosion before seeing flames consume the vessels.
Jose Rojas, an employee at Jones Boat Yard, told local media that the explosion was so powerful it broke his bedroom window. “The yacht in the middle was the one that exploded,” Rojas said.
Firefighting Efforts
MDFR crews swiftly launched a firefighting operation, attacking the flames from both land and water. Firefighters employed specialized foam suppression techniques to combat the intense flames and prevent further spread.
According to MDFR, two of the yachts measured approximately 60 feet in length, while the third was a 90-foot vessel. The fire was brought under control after several hours, but crews remained on-site to address environmental concerns, particularly fuel runoff from one of the yachts.
Environmental Impact
To mitigate potential ecological damage, MDFR deployed oil spill response equipment, including an oil-absorbent boom designed to contain and soak up contaminants. “This strong mesh-like sleeve encases a highly absorbent material that soaks up oil and surface sheen,” MDFR stated.
Investigation Underway
Authorities have not yet determined the cause of the fire. Investigators are assessing whether mechanical failure, electrical issues, or possible foul play contributed to the blaze. No injuries have been reported at this time.
