Photographer Turns Divorce Attorney

Abigail Seymour took an unconventional path to becoming a family law attorney. After years working as a photographer, including photographing weddings, Seymour decided to pursue a career in law later in life.

Seymour earned a photography degree and spent years working as a photographer and writer. She eventually built a photography business while raising her children, but over time, she began questioning whether photography was the career she wanted to continue pursuing.

Starting Law School At 47

Seymour ultimately enrolled in law school at age 47. Although she had considered becoming a lawyer when she was younger, she never pursued the path at the time. Years later, she decided to take that idea seriously and return to school.

The transition came with significant challenges. Seymour was balancing law school with motherhood while also dealing with personal loss. Despite the obstacles, she continued her studies and eventually earned her law degree.

Failing The Bar Did Not Stop Her

Passing the bar exam presented another major challenge. Seymour failed the exam before eventually passing and becoming licensed to practice law. The setbacks did not convince her to abandon her new career. Instead, she continued studying and working toward her goal of becoming an attorney.

A Breast Cancer Diagnosis

Seymour’s journey also included a breast cancer diagnosis, adding another difficult chapter to an already demanding period of her life. Despite facing the diagnosis while pursuing a new professional direction, Seymour continued moving forward with her legal career.

From Photographer To Family Law Attorney

After becoming an attorney, Seymour transitioned into family law, helping clients navigate matters involving divorce, custody and other family-related legal issues. Her career change is particularly notable because she did not make the transition early in adulthood. She chose to pursue law in her late 40s and continued working toward her goal despite failing the bar exam and facing a serious health diagnosis. During her conversation with Laura Jarrett, Seymour reflected on the feeling that ultimately pushed her to make the change.
