From Brazil to the United States
Thalles DeSouza’s path to one of America’s most prestigious universities began with a difficult move across countries. When DeSouza was just 13 years old, his family left Brazil because of dangerous conditions and started a new life in the United States. Like many immigrant families building a future from the ground up, DeSouza faced the challenge of adapting to a new country while continuing his education.
Working at Wendy’s Through High School
During high school, DeSouza worked at Wendy’s, balancing his job with his studies and his plans for the future. The fast food restaurant became more than just a place where he earned a paycheck. His dedication and work ethic made an impression on his managers and coworkers, who ultimately decided to help him pursue his education.
His Wendy’s bosses created a scholarship fund specifically to support DeSouza. That financial assistance helped him attend a local community college, giving him an opportunity to continue his education while working toward a much bigger goal.
A Dream of Yale
DeSouza’s journey eventually took him far beyond the community college classroom. After completing his studies and continuing to build his academic record, he applied to Yale University, one of the most selective universities in the country.
He was accepted to Yale with a full scholarship, marking a major achievement for someone whose educational journey began under circumstances far different from those of many students arriving at an Ivy League university.
