For Some Unknown Reason, Dr. Phil Was Granted Early Access to Classifies Files
For decades, the topic of UFOs, now officially referred to as Unidentified Anomalous Phenomena (UAP), has existed somewhere between conspiracy theory and classified government mystery. That changed dramatically after the U.S. government began releasing previously classified UAP records in 2026. Before many of those documents became public, television personality Dr. Phil McGraw revealed that he had been granted early access to portions of the files. After reviewing the material, he said he was “absolutely furious” over what he believes has been decades of government secrecy regarding unexplained aerial phenomena.

He pointed to reports dating back to 1949 involving the famous “Green Fireball” incidents over Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico. Military officials initially attempted to explain the sightings as meteors, but Dr. Lincoln LaPaz, one of the nation’s leading meteor experts at the time, reportedly concluded they were not meteors because the objects moved horizontally, silently, and maintained constant velocities inconsistent with known natural phenomena. Internal discussions reportedly centered on why these unexplained objects seemed to concentrate around nuclear installations.
Dr. Phil also noted that the pattern did not end during the Cold War. One document described a 2015 incident over the Pantex Plant in Amarillo, Texas, America’s primary nuclear weapons assembly and disassembly facility. According to the files, a UAP reportedly entered restricted airspace and was observed by multiple personnel. While no explanation was provided, the event reinforced what many researchers have argued for years: that unexplained objects appear unusually interested in nuclear weapons facilities around the world.
They Also Discussed Project SIGN and JANAP 146
Another major topic discussed was Project SIGN, the U.S. Air Force’s first official UFO investigation, launched in 1948 following pilot Kenneth Arnold’s famous sighting and shortly after the Roswell incident. According to Dr. Phil, these newly released records demonstrate that the government took UFO reports seriously much earlier than it publicly admitted. Rather than dismissing every report as mistaken identity or imagination, investigators were actively collecting evidence and attempting to determine what these objects might be.
Perhaps one of the most controversial documents Dr. Phil referenced was JANAP 146, a military communications regulation issued in 1953. The directive warned military pilots and personnel that discussing UFO encounters outside official channels could result in severe criminal penalties, including prison sentences of up to ten years. Critics have long argued that this policy discouraged witnesses from speaking publicly about unusual encounters and contributed to the decades-long stigma surrounding the subject. Dr. Phil argued that this was evidence of a deliberate effort to suppress discussion rather than encourage transparency.
The Turner Report and The Bolender Memo
The files also include references to the 1971 Turner Report, written by an Australian intelligence official, which alleged that the United States had intentionally created a “facade of ridicule” surrounding UFO reports. According to the report, public skepticism was encouraged as a means of reducing media attention and discouraging military personnel from coming forward with sightings. While the report represents the views of its author rather than definitive proof of a coordinated cover-up, it has become one of the more discussed documents among researchers following the latest releases.
Another document attracting renewed attention is the Bolender Memo, which indicated that reports involving potential national security implications were handled outside of Project Blue Book, the Air Force’s well-known public UFO investigation program. Critics of the government’s historical handling of UFO reports have argued that this memo demonstrates Project Blue Book never received all of the most significant cases. Whistleblower David Grusch has previously pointed to the memo as supporting evidence that more sensitive investigations occurred through separate classified channels.
Despite his strong opinions, Dr. Phil stopped short of claiming the documents prove extraterrestrial visitation. Instead, he emphasized that the records establish two important points. First, government agencies have been studying these incidents for decades. Second, many cases remain officially unexplained despite extensive investigation. He argued that the biggest story may not be whether the objects are alien spacecraft, but whether the American public was intentionally kept in the dark about the seriousness with which officials viewed the phenomenon.
The Pentagon’s ongoing disclosure initiative has already released hundreds of videos, documents, photographs, and audio recordings, with officials indicating additional releases are planned. While many of the files still leave more questions than answers, they represent one of the largest public disclosures of government UAP records in American history. Whether these unexplained objects ultimately turn out to be advanced foreign technology, unknown natural phenomena, classified military projects, or something entirely different, the conversation surrounding UFOs has undeniably shifted from fringe speculation to an area receiving unprecedented public and governmental scrutiny.
