FBI Foils Mall Of America Terror Plot

Mall Of America Terror Plot Foiled

The FBI says it stopped an alleged terror plot targeting the Mall of America in Minnesota after arresting an 18 year old man accused of planning a mass shooting in support of ISIS. Federal authorities say the suspect, Sheikhdoon Abdullahi Mohamud, had been under investigation for months. Investigators allege that he communicated with an undercover FBI source about his plans and expressed interest in carrying out a violent attack. According to federal prosecutors, Mohamud eventually identified the Mall of America in Bloomington as a potential target. Authorities say he discussed carrying out a mass shooting and wanted to cause a large number of deaths.

Alleged ISIS Support

Investigators allege that Mohamud pledged allegiance to ISIS and discussed his desire to conduct an attack inspired by the terrorist organization. Federal authorities say he also discussed traveling overseas to join a terrorist group but later focused on carrying out an attack in Minnesota. The FBI says investigators were able to monitor the alleged planning and intervene before the attack could take place.

Arrest And Charges

Authorities say Mohamud was arrested after allegedly obtaining an AK 47 style rifle, ammunition and magazines from an undercover FBI employee. The firearm had been rendered inoperable by investigators before the transaction, according to federal officials. Prosecutors allege that Mohamud planned to attack the mall on October 24 during a scheduled event that was expected to attract a large crowd. Mohamud has been charged federally in connection with the alleged plot. The charges are allegations, and he is presumed innocent unless proven guilty in court. The investigation remains ongoing as federal authorities continue examining the alleged planning, communications and potential motives behind the suspected attack.
