Armed Standoff Begins During Attempt To Serve Warrant
A 60-year-old man identified as Jose Luis Antigua-Martinez faced arrest Thursday morning when Hialeah police officers attempted to serve an active warrant related to alleged sex battery and child sex abuse in Hialeah, Florida. As officers approached a warehouse near West Eighth Avenue and 81st Street, Antigua-Martinez became armed and retreated inside the building, refusing to cooperate. He barricaded himself for more than five hours as police established a perimeter and brought in specialized units, including the SWAT team and crisis negotiators. Authorities blocked nearby streets, restricted access to the area, and worked to de-escalate the standoff. At no point during the confrontation were any officers or bystanders reported injured. After extensive negotiations, Antigua-Martinez surrendered to police and was taken into custody without further incident.
Charges Alleged Involving Minor Victim
Once in custody, Antigua-Martinez was charged with multiple serious offenses associated with sexual abuse of a minor. According to official reports and arrest documents, the charges include engaging in a sexual act with a child, unlawful sexual activity with a specified minor, and lewd and lascivious touching of certain minors. The investigation that led to the warrant reportedly began after a minor known to the suspect disclosed to authorities that she had experienced repeated inappropriate contact while sleeping at his residence. Law enforcement indicated that the minor had secretly recorded video evidence of Antigua-Martinez touching her while she was asleep. In interviews and messages to the victim following the incident, he issued apologies and claimed he would “change the way he shows love,” though he also professed enduring affection even after being confronted. The suspect’s defense at various points included assertions that he was framed for the accusations.
Police Response And Community Reaction
Hialeah Police Lieutenant Eddie Rodriguez explained that when officers first arrived, Antigua-Martinez barricaded himself and at one point reportedly presented a handgun during the initial moments of the standoff. Responders maintained a cautious approach, deploying crisis negotiators alongside the SWAT team to reduce the risk of violence. Throughout the ordeal, streets surrounding the warehouse were closed and local businesses were advised to keep patrons and staff clear of the area. Neighbors described a tense scene, noting the unusual scale of the police response in that part of the city. The extended hours of isolation and negotiation emphasized law enforcement’s effort to prioritize public safety while attempting to secure a peaceful outcome. When the suspect eventually exited the building, he was taken into custody without injury to anyone on scene.
Legal Proceedings And Potential Penalties
Following his arrest, Antigua-Martinez was transported to a Miami-Dade County jail facility where he is being held without bond. A judge denied bond during his first court appearance. Prosecutors indicated that the severity of the charges could carry significant prison sentences, potentially life imprisonment if a conviction is secured. Additional charges related to the standoff and resisting law enforcement may be added as the case advances through the judicial system. Authorities also issued protective orders requiring him to stay away from the alleged victim. Law enforcement continues to investigate details surrounding the allegations and any related incidents.
