The United States’ decision to halt military intelligence sharing with Ukraine has led to significant battlefield setbacks, according to Western and Ukrainian officials. The move, which followed a tense meeting between U.S. President Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, has resulted in Russian forces gaining ground and has severely weakened Ukraine’s negotiating position in ongoing conflict talks.
A Blow to Ukrainian Defense
Ukrainian military sources report that the suspension of U.S. intelligence has had immediate and deadly consequences. A senior Ukrainian military officer, speaking to TIME under the condition of anonymity, claimed that “hundreds of Ukrainians have died” as a direct result of the intelligence blackout. Morale among troops has reportedly plummeted as the Ukrainian military is now forced to operate without critical surveillance capabilities.
The loss of U.S. intelligence particularly affects the frontlines in the Russian region of Kursk, an area Ukraine seized in a counteroffensive last August. With U.S. satellite data and battlefield insights no longer available, Ukrainian forces have struggled to hold their positions, allowing Russian troops, reinforced by North Korean soldiers, to launch a counteroffensive. Military analysts warn that continued setbacks in Kursk could impact Ukraine’s ability to negotiate territorial exchanges with Russia in future peace talks.
The Oval Office Clash and Its Fallout
The intelligence-sharing freeze followed a heated exchange between Presidents Trump and Zelensky on February 28 in the Oval Office. During the meeting, Zelensky reportedly questioned the reliability of Russian commitments to any ceasefire, which prompted a sharp rebuke from Trump and Vice President J.D. Vance. Trump allegedly warned Zelensky, “You don’t have the cards. You’re gambling with World War III.” Shortly thereafter, the administration suspended military aid and halted intelligence sharing.
General Keith Kellogg, Trump’s special envoy to Ukraine, defended the decision, stating that the U.S. response was akin to “hitting a mule with a two-by-four across the nose” to get Ukraine’s attention. The remarks have fueled concerns among Ukrainian officials that the U.S. is using military assistance as leverage to push Kyiv toward negotiations on less favorable terms.
Intelligence and Surveillance Gap
Prior to the suspension, the U.S. provided Ukraine with satellite imagery and intelligence that allowed for precision strikes using High Mobility Artillery Rocket Systems (HIMARS). The loss of these capabilities now leaves Ukrainian forces blind to enemy movements, particularly in Russian airspace. According to Ukrainian military sources, Russia has capitalized on this gap, launching surprise airstrikes that Ukraine is struggling to anticipate.
Even private intelligence assets have been affected. Maxar Technologies, a U.S.-based satellite company that had been supplying Ukraine with critical battlefield imagery, confirmed that its Ukrainian accounts have been temporarily disabled due to U.S. government directives. “Each customer makes their own decisions on how they use and share that data,” Maxar said in an official statement.
A European Lifeline?
With U.S. intelligence gone, some European allies have stepped in to mitigate the damage. However, Ukrainian officials say European intelligence agencies do not have the same reach or technological capability as the U.S., leaving a critical gap in battlefield awareness. “We are really thankful to European partners,” said one Ukrainian officer. “This is the only solid point that gives us any hope, because without this support, we cannot survive.”
