Small Plane Crashes Near South Florida State Hospital in Pembroke Pines

Plane Crash Near Hospital in Florida

A small plane crashed Thursday on the grounds of South Florida State Hospital in Pembroke Pines, triggering a large emergency response near North Perry Airport in Broward County. The aircraft went down in a grassy area west of the airport, narrowly avoiding nearby buildings in what authorities say could have become a much more serious disaster.

Aerial footage from Chopper 6 showed the plane completely flipped upside down with visible damage across the aircraft. The wreckage rested only feet away from hospital buildings, raising immediate concerns about potential injuries both inside the plane and on the ground.

Emergency Crews Rush to the Scene

Pembroke Pines Fire Rescue, law enforcement officers, and aviation officials quickly responded after reports of the crash surfaced. Emergency crews secured the area around the aircraft while investigators began evaluating the wreckage and checking for possible fuel leaks or fire risks.

Authorities temporarily restricted access around portions of the hospital property as first responders worked around the scene. Officials have not yet confirmed how many people were on board the plane or whether there were serious injuries or fatalities connected to the crash.

Investigation Underway

Federal investigators are expected to take over the investigation as officials work to determine what caused the aircraft to go down so close to the airport. The Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board will likely examine the plane’s maintenance records, pilot communications, weather conditions, and witness accounts as part of the investigation.

North Perry Airport is one of South Florida’s busiest general aviation airports and handles a large number of private aircraft and flight training operations daily. The airport has experienced multiple aviation incidents over the years due to its high traffic volume and surrounding urban development.

Narrow Escape Raises Concerns

Images from the crash scene highlighted how narrowly the aircraft missed nearby structures on the hospital grounds. Witnesses in the area reported hearing a loud impact before seeing emergency vehicles rushing toward the site.

The close proximity of the crash to occupied buildings has once again raised concerns about aviation safety around densely populated parts of South Florida, particularly near airports surrounded by residential neighborhoods, businesses, and public facilities.

Officials are expected to release more information once investigators complete their preliminary assessment of the crash scene.
