Inter Miami CF continued its red hot run in Major League Soccer on Saturday night, extending its winning streak to six matches with a hard fought 1-0 victory over CF Montreal. While Luis Suárez delivered the decisive goal from the penalty spot, the match was overshadowed by a frightening injury to Germán Berterame that brought the contest to a lengthy halt.
The dramatic moment came late in the second half when Berterame collided head-to-head with Montreal defender Efraín Morales while battling for a ball inside the penalty area. The impact left the 27 year old Inter Miami forward unconscious on the field, prompting immediate medical attention. Berterame was eventually taken away by ambulance, and no immediate update was available regarding his condition following the match.
After officials reviewed the play, Inter Miami was awarded a penalty kick for the foul on Berterame.
Suárez calmly stepped to the spot in the 81st minute and rolled a composed effort past Montreal goalkeeper Sébastian Breza to score the game’s only goal. The veteran striker’s ninth goal of the season continued his remarkable recent form, marking his sixth goal in the club’s last three matches.
The victory pushed Inter Miami to 11-2-4 on the season and strengthened its position among the league’s elite while extending the club’s longest winning streak of the campaign. Inter Miami’s defense once again proved to be the difference.
Goalkeeper Rocco Ríos Novo made two saves in his third MLS start of the season, recording his second clean sheet. Although Montreal generated opportunities throughout the evening, Miami’s organized back line prevented the visitors from finding an equalizer.
On the opposite end, Breza finished with one save in his second start of the season for CF Montreal. Despite another solid individual effort, the Canadian club dropped to 4-10-3 and remains in search of its first shutout with Breza in goal during his MLS career.
Inter Miami continued to play without global superstar Lionel Messi, who has yet to return after helping Argentina reach the FIFA World Cup final, where the Albiceleste finished as runners-up.
Despite Messi’s absence for a second consecutive league match, Miami has shown impressive depth and resilience, relying on experienced veterans and key offseason additions to keep its momentum rolling. One of those additions made his long awaited MLS debut on Saturday.
Brazilian midfielder Carlos Casemiro, fresh off representing Brazil at the World Cup, appeared in his first league match for Inter Miami following a decorated career with Spanish giants Real Madrid. His experience and composure in midfield provided another boost to an already confident Miami squad.
Even without Messi, Inter Miami continues to find ways to win. Suárez has rediscovered his scoring touch at exactly the right time, while the club’s defensive stability has made it increasingly difficult for opponents to break through. Casemiro’s arrival adds another world-class presence to an already star-studded roster, giving Miami even greater depth as it chases MLS honors.
